Ulubatlı Hasan, also known as Hasan of Ulubat, was a brave soldier from the Ottoman Empire. He was born in 1428 and became a hero during the Siege of Constantinople in 1453. Hasan is remembered as a legendary figure for his courage and sacrifice.
He came from a small village called Ulubat, near Karacabey in the Bursa region.
The Great Siege of Constantinople
In 1453, when Ulubatlı Hasan was 25 years old, he joined the Ottoman army in their attack on Constantinople. This city was the last major stronghold of the Byzantine Empire. The Ottomans had tried to capture it many times before.
This time, the Ottoman army was led by Sultan Mehmed II. He was a young leader, only in his early twenties, but he was already showing great skill. The city's strong double walls were very difficult to break through. Even with powerful cannons, the siege lasted for 53 days.
Hasan's Heroic Act
On the final day of the siege, May 29, the Ottoman army launched their big attack. After morning prayers, the Ottoman military band played music. Ulubatlı Hasan was one of the first soldiers to climb the city walls.
He carried only his Ottoman sword, a small shield, and the Ottoman flag. Arrows, stones, spears, and bullets rained down on him. Despite the danger, he kept climbing. He reached the very top of the wall.
There, he bravely planted the Ottoman flag. He defended the flag until 12 of his friends joined him. Soon after, Ulubatlı Hasan fell. He had 27 arrows in his body. Seeing the Ottoman flag flying high gave the Ottoman troops great hope. It also made the city's defenders lose heart. This brave act helped the Ottomans finally conquer Constantinople.
