Cláudio Roberto da Silva (born May 29, 1976), known to many as Cláudio Caçapa or just Caçapa, is a Brazilian football coach and a former player. He used to play as a central defender, which is a key defensive position in football. Most recently, he was the manager for the Belgian club RWD Molenbeek.

Caçapa started his professional playing career in 1996 with Atlético Mineiro in Brazil. He then played for several well-known teams like Lyon in France, Newcastle United in England, and other Brazilian clubs such as Cruzeiro and Avaí. He also played a few times for the Brazilian national team.

Club Career: Caçapa's Journey in Football

Caçapa played for many different clubs during his career. He was known for his strong defense and leadership on the field.

Atlético Mineiro: Starting Strong

Caçapa began his football journey in 1996 with Atlético Mineiro in Brazil. He quickly became a regular player for the team. In 1999, he won the Bola de Ouro (Golden Ball) award. This award recognized him as the best defender in Brazil's top league, Série A, that season.

Lyon: French Champion Years

In 2001, Caçapa moved to Europe, joining the French club Lyon on a loan. He played his first game in the French Ligue 1 championship in February 2001. He even scored a goal in the 2001 Coupe de la Ligue Final, which Lyon won.

Later that year, he signed a five-year contract with Lyon. He became the team captain and led Lyon to win the French championship for five seasons in a row. This was a very successful time for him and the club. In October 2006, he became a French citizen after living in the country for over five years. His contract with Lyon ended in 2007, and he decided to look for new challenges.

Newcastle United: Playing in England

On August 3, 2007, Caçapa joined Newcastle United in England. He moved on a free transfer, meaning Newcastle did not have to pay a fee to Lyon. He signed a two-year deal.

He made his first appearance for Newcastle in August, becoming the 1,000th player to play for the club in a competitive match. He scored his first goal for Newcastle against Tottenham Hotspur in October. He also scored another goal in an FA Cup match in January 2008. Caçapa faced some injuries during his time at Newcastle. In 2008-09, he sometimes played as a midfielder because the team had many injured players. His contract ended in July 2009, and he left the club.

Cruzeiro: Back in Brazil

After leaving Newcastle, Caçapa returned to Brazil. He joined Cruzeiro, a big rival of his former club Atlético Mineiro. He played for Cruzeiro until the end of the 2010 season.

Évian: A Quick Return to France

In January 2011, Caçapa went back to France to play for Évian in Ligue 2, the second division. He signed a six-month contract. He helped the team win the Ligue 2 title and get promoted to Ligue 1 for the first time in their history.

Avaí: Retirement from Playing

After his contract with Évian finished, Caçapa received an offer from Avaí in Brazil. He joined the club in July 2011. He played for Avaí until the end of the season. On March 20, 2012, he announced his retirement from playing football. He also opened a football school called Arena Lyon in his hometown of Lavras.

International Career: Representing Brazil

Caçapa's great performances at Atlético Mineiro earned him a call-up to the Brazilian national team. He played his first game for Brazil on February 23, 2000, against Thailand. Overall, he played three official international matches for his country.

Managerial Career: From Player to Coach

After retiring as a player, Caçapa started a new career as a football coach.

  • Brazil U15 Team: In December 2013, he became the manager of Brazil's under-15 national team. He held this position until February 2015.
  • Lyon Assistant Manager: In January 2016, he returned to Lyon, this time as an assistant manager.
  • Botafogo Interim Coach: In June 2023, Caçapa was named the interim head coach for Botafogo in Brazil.
  • RWD Molenbeek Head Coach: In July 2023, he became the head coach of RWD Molenbeek in Belgium. He left the club in February 2024.
