Sir Henry Seton-Karr (February 5, 1853 – May 29, 1914) was an English explorer, hunter, and writer. He was also a politician who served in the British Parliament from 1885 to 1906. He was a member of the Conservative Party.
Early Life and Adventures
Henry Seton-Karr was born in India in 1853. His father, George Berkeley Seton-Karr, worked for the British government there. Henry went to Harrow School and then studied at Oxford University. He earned a degree in law in 1876 and became a lawyer in 1879.
Beyond his studies, Henry was an adventurous person. He owned a cattle ranch in Wyoming, USA. He was also known as an explorer and a big game hunter. He wrote books about his travels and experiences.
Life as a Politician
Henry Seton-Karr became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1885. He represented the area of St Helens in the British Parliament. He held this position for many years, until 1906. After that, he tried to become an MP for a different area, Berwickshire, in 1910, but he was not successful.
Henry also held other important roles. In 1896, he became a Deputy Lieutenant for Roxburghshire. This was an important local position. In 1902, he received two special honours. He was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG). Soon after, he was knighted by the King, becoming Sir Henry Seton-Karr.
He was also involved in business and community work. He was the Chairman of the Liverpool, St Helens and South Lancashire Railway when it opened in 1900. He also led the Lancashire and Cheshire Workingmen's Federation in the late 1890s.
Family Life
Henry Seton-Karr was married twice. His first wife was Edith Eliza Pilkington. They married in 1880. They had three children: George Bernard, Malcolm Henry, and Edith Muriel. Sadly, Edith Eliza passed away in 1884. Two of their children, George and Edith Muriel, also died when they were teenagers.
In 1886, Henry married his second wife, Jane Jarvie Thorburn. They had two children together: Helen Mary and Kenneth William.
Legacy
Even today, Henry Seton-Karr is remembered in some ways. At the Grange Park Golf Club in St Helens, there is an annual golf competition named after him. It is one of the most important events on the club's calendar.
Tragic Death
Sir Henry Seton-Karr died in a very sad accident in 1914. He was on his way back to England from a hunting trip in British Columbia, Canada. He was traveling on a ship called the Empress of Ireland. This ship sank in the St. Lawrence River after hitting another ship. This event was Canada's worst peacetime maritime disaster.
Henry Seton-Karr was buried in the Mount Hermon Cemetery in Sillery, Quebec, Canada.
