Faust's novel The Double Crown used two of his pen names in The Argosy magazine in 1918.

Frederick Schiller Faust (born May 29, 1892 – died May 12, 1944) was an American writer. He was best known for his exciting Western stories. He often used the pen name Max Brand.

As Max Brand, he also created a very popular character named Dr. James Kildare. Dr. Kildare was a young medical intern. His stories first appeared in pulp magazines, which were inexpensive fiction magazines. Later, Dr. Kildare became famous in movies, radio shows, TV series, and even comic books!

Frederick Faust used many other pen names too. Some of these were George Owen Baxter, Evan Evans, Peter Dawson, and David Manning. He also wrote some books using his real name. As George Challis, he wrote the "Tizzo the Firebrand" series. These were historical adventure stories set in Renaissance Italy. They featured a brave warrior named Tizzo.

Life and Death

Frederick Faust was a very busy writer. In 1944, he was working on movies at Warner Brothers. He wanted to experience World War II firsthand to write a war novel. A military advisor helped him get a job as a war correspondent. This meant he would report on the war for Harper's Magazine.

He traveled with American soldiers fighting in Italy. Sadly, in May 1944, he was badly hurt by shrapnel, which are small metal pieces from an explosion. He died from his injuries.
