Carmelo Kyam Anthony (born May 29, 1984) is an American former professional basketball player. He played for 19 seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Anthony was chosen as an NBA All-Star ten times. He was also named to an All-NBA Team six times.

He played college basketball for the Syracuse Orange. In 2003, as a freshman, he helped them win a national championship. He was also named the NCAA Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. In 2021, he was chosen for the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. Many people think he is one of the best scorers in NBA history.

After one year at Syracuse, Anthony joined the 2003 NBA draft. He was picked third overall by the Denver Nuggets. With the Nuggets, he led them to the playoffs every year from 2004 to 2010. The team won two division titles during that time. In 2009, Anthony helped the Nuggets reach the conference finals for the first time since 1985. In 2011, he was traded from Denver to the New York Knicks.

On January 24, 2014, Anthony scored a career-high 62 points against the Charlotte Bobcats. This set a new record for the Knicks and for Madison Square Garden. Anthony was later traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He played one season there before a short time with the Houston Rockets. He then spent two seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers before joining the Los Angeles Lakers.

Anthony has played in the Olympics for the US national team four times, which is a record. He won a bronze medal in 2004 and gold medals in 2008, 2012, and 2016. By April 2016, he was the US Olympic team's all-time leader in points, rebounds, and games played. He is currently tenth on the NBA career scoring list.

Early Life and High School Basketball

Anthony was born in Brooklyn, New York City. His father, Carmelo Iriarte, was from Puerto Rico. His mother, Mary Anthony, is African-American. When Anthony was eight, his family moved to Baltimore.

Anthony went to Towson Catholic High School for his first three years. In the summer of 1999, he grew taller and became a strong player. He was named the best metro player by The Baltimore Sun in 2001. He also won the Baltimore Catholic League player of the year award. As a sophomore, he averaged 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals.

During his junior year, Anthony averaged 23 points and 10.3 rebounds. He was very good, but sometimes missed classes. Many scouts thought he was not strong enough for the NBA yet. Still, he was named Baltimore's County Player of the Year.

After his junior year, many top college coaches wanted Anthony to play for their teams. He decided to go to Syracuse University before his senior year. Because his grades were low, he needed to improve them to get into Syracuse. For his senior year, he transferred to Oak Hill Academy in Virginia.

In the summer of 2001, Anthony played in an AAU tournament in Las Vegas, Nevada. He averaged 25.2 points per game and caught the eye of NBA scouts. He also met LeBron James there, and they became friends.

Oak Hill Academy had a 42-game winning streak when Anthony joined. They won several big tournaments. One important game was against LeBron James's high school team. James scored 36 points, but Anthony scored 34 points and had 11 rebounds. Oak Hill won 72–66. The team finished the season ranked third in the country.

Anthony averaged 21.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.0 assists in his senior year. He was named a USA Today All-USA First Team player. He also played in the Jordan Brand Classic and the McDonald's All-American Game. In the McDonald's game, he scored 19 points and won a dunk contest. Even though he had trouble with his ACT test, he got a good enough score and went to Syracuse.

College Career at Syracuse

Anthony played one season at Syracuse University in 2002–03. He averaged 22.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. He helped the Syracuse Orangemen win their first-ever NCAA tournament title in 2003. He led the team in scoring, rebounding, and minutes played.

In the Final Four, Anthony scored 33 points against the University of Texas. This set an NCAA tournament record for most points by a freshman. In the championship game against the University of Kansas, Anthony had 20 points and 10 rebounds. He won the tournament's Most Outstanding Player Award.

Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim said Anthony was "by far, the best player in college basketball." Anthony had planned to stay at Syracuse for two or three seasons. But since he had already achieved so much, he decided to enter the 2003 NBA draft. He was named Second-Team All-American and won the NCAA Freshman of the Year award.
