Arne Friedrich, born on May 29, 1979, is a famous German football player who used to play as a defender. He also worked as a sporting director for the football club Hertha BSC.
Arne was a very flexible player. He could play in different defensive spots, like full-back or centre-back, and sometimes even in the middle of the field. He played for the German national team 82 times and scored one goal. He took part in big tournaments like Euro 2004 and the World Cups in 2006 and 2010. He also played in Euro 2008.

Arne's Club Football Career
Starting His Football Journey
Arne Friedrich began his professional football career in the 2000–01 season. A coach named Hermann Gerland saw him playing for a club called SC Verl. Gerland was impressed and brought Arne to Arminia Bielefeld. Arne quickly became a regular player there.
Playing for Hertha BSC

In 2002, Arne joined Hertha BSC, a club in Berlin. That same year, he helped them win the DFB-Ligapokal, a German football cup. They beat strong teams like Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund to win the trophy.
From 2004–05, Arne became the captain of Hertha BSC. He stayed captain for the rest of his time there. He played 231 matches for the club in Germany's top league.
Time at VfL Wolfsburg
After Hertha BSC was moved to a lower league in 2010, Arne left the club. He joined VfL Wolfsburg and signed a three-year contract. However, due to a long-term injury, he left Wolfsburg in September 2011.
Playing in the USA with Chicago Fire
In March 2012, Arne moved to the United States and signed with the Chicago Fire team in Major League Soccer. He played his first game for them in April 2012.
Arne scored his first goal for Chicago Fire in August 2012. He was even named the club's Defender of the Year for the 2012 season. He extended his contract with Chicago Fire until the end of 2013.
Because of ongoing injuries, Arne did not play any matches in 2013. On June 23, 2013, he announced that he was retiring from professional football.
Arne's International Career for Germany

Arne Friedrich played five games for the German Under-21 team. He also played once for a special B-team called "Team 2006".
Making His Debut for the Senior Team
On August 21, 2002, Arne played his first game for the senior German team. It was a match against Bulgaria that ended in a 2–2 draw. His first big tournament with the national team was Euro 2004. He played in all three group matches, but Germany was eliminated.
In December 2004, Arne was the captain for Germany in a friendly game against Thailand. Germany won that game 5–1. He captained the team three more times after that.
World Cup and Euro Tournaments
In 2005, Germany hosted the Confederations Cup. Arne played in this tournament, sharing the right-back position with another player. The next year, he was part of the German team for the 2006 World Cup. He started almost all of Germany's games in that tournament.
Arne was also part of the German team for Euro 2008. He started the final group game and all three knockout matches. In the quarter-final, he played a fantastic game, stopping Portugal's star player Cristiano Ronaldo.
In March 2009, the German coach Joachim Löw decided that Arne would play as a centre-back instead of a right-back.
Arne was chosen for Germany's team in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. On July 3, 2010, in his 77th game for Germany, he scored his first international goal. This goal came in a 4–0 win against Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals.
Arne's Career After Playing
Coaching and Management Roles
On August 28, 2014, Arne Friedrich became an assistant coach for the German Under-18 national team. He stayed in that role until the end of 2015.
In November 2019, Arne was hired by Hertha BSC as a performance manager. He worked under the manager Jürgen Klinsmann. After six months, Arne became the sporting director for Hertha BSC in the summer of 2020.
Later, in December, he was made the interim managing director. After five successful months, Arne returned to his role as sporting director in July 2021. At the same time, he also joined the executive board of Hertha BSC.
