The 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup was a big international football (soccer) tournament. It was the seventh time this competition was held. The event took place in Germany from June 15 to June 29, 2005.

Eight national teams competed to see who was the best. Brazil won the cup by beating their rivals, Argentina, in the final match. Germany, who hosted the tournament, finished in third place.

What is the Confederations Cup?

The FIFA Confederations Cup was a football tournament for national teams. It was held every four years by FIFA, the world's football governing body. The teams that played were usually:

  • The winner of the most recent FIFA World Cup.
  • The host country of the next World Cup.
  • The champions from each of the six FIFA confederations (like Europe, South America, Africa, etc.).

This tournament was a way for the host country to practice for the World Cup. It also gave different champions a chance to play against each other.

How the Tournament Worked

The 2005 tournament had eight teams. These teams were split into two groups, Group A and Group B. Each team played every other team in their group once.

Group Stage

After all the group games, the top two teams from each group moved on. They went to the next part of the tournament, called the knockout stage.

Group A Teams

Germany and Argentina were the two teams that moved on from Group A. They both played very well in their matches.

Group B Teams

Mexico and Brazil were the teams that made it out of Group B. They showed strong performances to qualify for the next round.

Knockout Stage

The knockout stage was where the competition got really exciting. If a team lost a match, they were out of the tournament.

  • Semi-finals:

* Germany Germany played against Brazil Brazil. Brazil won this match 3-2. * Mexico Mexico played against Argentina Argentina. This game was very close and went to a penalty shootout. Argentina won 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

  • Third Place Match:

* Germany Germany played Mexico Mexico to decide who would finish third. Germany won this exciting game 4-3 after extra time.

  • Final Match:

* The big final was between Brazil Brazil and Argentina Argentina. Brazil played amazingly and won the final 4-1. This made Brazil the champions of the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup!
