Wali-ur-Rehman (also known as Wali Ur-Rehman Mehsud) was a leader within the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). He was born in 1970 and passed away on May 29, 2013. He was based in South Waziristan, a region in Pakistan. Before becoming a senior commander, Wali-ur-Rehman was a spokesperson for Baitullah Mehsud, who was the previous leader of the TTP.
Early Life and Background
Wali-ur-Rehman's family came from the Mal Khel part of the Mehsud tribe in South Waziristan. In 1996, he finished his studies at a religious school called Jamia Islamia Imdadia in Faisalabad. After his studies, he went back to South Waziristan to teach at another religious school in Kani Guram.
Before he joined the Taliban in 2004, he was connected to a political party called Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F).
Becoming a Leader
After Baitullah Mehsud died in a missile attack, a meeting was held to choose a new leader for the Pakistani Taliban. This meeting was called a shura. Wali-ur-Rehman was considered one of the possible new leaders.
On August 9, 2009, there were rumors about a disagreement at the shura. It was said that Wali-ur-Rehman and another leader, Hakimullah Mehsud, had a heated argument. However, Rehman later spoke to a reporter and said that there was no fighting. He and Hakimullah then confirmed to the BBC that Baitullah Mehsud had indeed passed away.
International Actions
On November 2, 2009, authorities in Pakistan offered a reward of 50 million Pakistani rupees (about $600,000) for information that could lead to Wali-ur-Rehman's capture or death. They offered the same reward for Hakimullah Mehsud and Qari Hussain.
Later, on September 1, 2010, the United States added Wali-ur-Rehman and Hakimullah Mehsud to a special list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists. The TTP group was also added to a list of Foreign Terrorist Organizations. In an interview on August 26, 2011, Wali-ur-Rehman spoke about wanting to get revenge on the U.S. and NATO (especially France and Britain).
Death
On May 29, 2013, reports said that Wali-ur-Rehman was killed. This happened during a US drone strike on a building in the Chashma area. This area is near Miranshah, which is the main town in the North Waziristan tribal region of northwest Pakistan. The strike also caused the deaths of six people who were with him.
His death was confirmed the next day, on May 30, 2013, by Tehrik-e-Taliban spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan.
