Duarte Lobo (born around 1565 – died 1646) was a famous Portuguese composer. He lived during the end of the Renaissance and the start of the Baroque periods. He is considered one of the most important Portuguese composers of his time. Other great composers from this "golden age" of Portuguese polyphony included Filipe de Magalhães and Manuel Cardoso. They all learned music from Manuel Mendes.

Life of a Composer

Not much is known about Duarte Lobo's early life. He was born in Alcáçovas, a town in southern Portugal. He started his musical journey as a choir boy in Évora. There, he also studied music with his teacher, Manuel Mendes.

Lobo's first important job was as a mestre de capela (music director) at the cathedral in Évora. Before 1589, he moved to Lisbon to become the music director at the Hospital Real. By 1591, he got the most important music job in Portugal: mestre de capela at the Lisbon cathedral. He held this position for a very long time, until 1639.

He also directed the Seminar of São Bartolomeu. Plus, he taught music at the 'Colégio do Claustro da Sé' in Lisbon. One of his students was the famous composer Manuel Machado.

Even though Duarte Lobo lived when the Baroque music era was beginning, his music style was quite traditional. He followed the older techniques of the Renaissance masters. The polyphonic style of Palestrina, a famous Italian composer, greatly influenced Lobo's music throughout his life.

His Music and Recordings

Duarte Lobo wrote many pieces of sacred music. These were published in six books by Christophe Plantin in Antwerp. His works include masses, responsories, antiphons, Magnificats, and motets.

You can still listen to his music today! Here are some recordings:

  • Portuguese Requiem Masses, including his Missa pro defunctis. This was recorded by the Schola Cantorum of Oxford and conducted by Jeremy Summerly.
  • Duarte Lôbo, Requiem. This recording features The Tallis Scholars, led by Peter Phillips.
  • Pater Peccavi, including his Missa Veni Domine. This was recorded by The Marian Consort and conducted by Rory McCleery.
