*Club domestic league appearances and goals

John Arne Semundseth Riise (born 24 September 1980) is a famous Norwegian former footballer and coach. He was known as one of the best left-backs in the world during his playing days.

Riise holds the record for the most appearances for the Norway national team, with 110 games. He scored 16 goals for his country before he stopped playing international football in 2013. He played for Premier League club Liverpool for seven years, where he won many important trophies, including the UEFA Champions League in 2005. After Liverpool, he moved to play for Roma in Italy.

Playing Career Highlights

Starting Out in Football

John Arne Riise started his football journey in Norway with Aalesund. After playing just one season as a senior player, he moved to France in 1998 to join Monaco. He spent his early professional years there.

When Aalesund opened their new stadium in 2005, a statue was put up outside. Many people thought it looked a lot like Riise, even though the person who donated it didn't say it was him. Riise himself said that everyone could see it was made for him.

Riise was part of the Monaco team that won the French league title in the 1999–2000 season. He later wanted to leave the club and was sold to Liverpool for £4 million.

He also scored important goals in the Premier League against big teams like Arsenal and Manchester United. In his first season, he scored 8 goals for Liverpool.

He helped Liverpool win the UEFA Champions League in the 2004–05 season. In the final against Milan, he set up Liverpool's first goal. He also helped the team win the 2005–06 FA Cup, scoring in the semi-final and in the penalty shootout in the final against West Ham.

On 15 January 2008, Riise played his 250th game for Liverpool, putting him in the top 50 players with the most appearances for the club.

Moving to Roma

In June 2008, Riise signed a four-year contract with the Italian club Roma. He quickly became a favorite among the fans because of his hard work. His first goal for Roma was against Internazionale, a very important game. He also scored a fantastic free kick against Milan and was named Man of the Match in that game.

One of his most memorable moments for Roma was in January 2010, when he scored a late header to win the game 2–1 against Juventus. He also caused the opposing goalkeeper to be sent off in that match.

After Playing Football

After retiring as a player, Riise became a sports director for the Maltese club Birkirkara in 2019, but he left after a few months.
