Bobby Cannavale (born May 3, 1970) is an American actor. He became well-known for his role as paramedic Roberto "Bobby" Caffey in the TV series Third Watch from 1999 to 2001.

He has won two Primetime Emmy Awards. One was in 2005 for his guest role in Will & Grace. The other was in 2013 for playing the tough gangster Gyp Rosetti in Boardwalk Empire. Bobby Cannavale has also appeared in many other TV shows. These include Nurse Jackie, Vinyl, Mr. Robot, Blue Bloods, and Master of None. More recently, he starred in Homecoming (2018–2020), Nine Perfect Strangers (2021), and The Watcher (2022).

Bobby Cannavale has also performed on Broadway. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his roles in Mauritius (2008) and The ... with the Hat (2011). He has acted in many movies too. Some of his dramatic films are The Station Agent (2003) and The Irishman (2019). For comedies, he's been in Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009) and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017). He also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Jim Paxton in Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018). He has lent his voice to animated movies and shows like Sing 2 (2021) and BoJack Horseman.

Early life

Bobby Cannavale was born on May 3, 1970, in Union City, New Jersey. He grew up there with his parents, Isabel and Salvatore Cannavale. His father was of Italian background, and his mother was Cuban. She moved to the U.S. in 1960. Bobby was raised Catholic and went to St. Michael's Catholic School. He was an altar boy and sang in the chorus.

When he was eight, Bobby got a big role in his school play. He played Winthrop in The Music Man. Later, he played a gangster in Guys and Dolls. These plays made him love acting. His parents divorced when he was 13. His mother then moved the family to Puerto Rico. After two years, they moved to Margate, Florida. Bobby went to Coconut Creek High School from 1983 to 1986. He was expelled in his senior year for being a "cutup." He then moved back to New Jersey to live with his grandmother. This helped him be closer to New York City to start his acting career. He finished high school at Union Hill High School.

Bobby Cannavale started his acting career in theater. He didn't have any formal acting training. He got early movie roles in Night Falls on Manhattan (1997) and The Bone Collector (1999). He became widely known for playing Bobby Caffey in Third Watch for two seasons. After that, in 2001, he starred with Alan Arkin in 100 Centre Street. This show was written and directed by Sidney Lumet, who was his father-in-law at the time.

In 2002, he joined the cast of Ally McBeal for its final episodes. He then starred in the miniseries Kingpin. In 2003, he appeared in Oz. He also played a man who befriends a lonely person in the film The Station Agent. From 2004 to 2006, he had a recurring role on Will & Grace. He played Vince D'Angelo, the boyfriend and later husband of Will Truman. He won an Emmy Award in 2005 for this role. He also appeared in films like Snakes on a Plane (2006). He guest-starred in TV shows such as ... and the City and Law & Order.

Cannavale also lent his voice to the Ken Burns PBS series The War. This series told the story of World War II. In 2008, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in the Broadway play Mauritius. Since 2015, Cannavale has done voice-over work for Playing On Air. This group records short plays for public radio and podcasts. In January 2020, he performed with his partner Rose Byrne in the play Medea. In 2021, he played Tony Hogburn in the Hulu miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers. In 2022, Cannavale starred as Dean Braddock in the Netflix series The Watcher.

Personal life

Bobby Cannavale was married to actress and screenwriter Jenny Lumet from 1994 to 2003. They have a son together, actor Jake Cannavale. Bobby and Jake even played father and son in season four of Nurse Jackie.

Since 2012, Bobby has been in a relationship with Australian actress Rose Byrne. They have two sons together, born in 2016 and 2017.
