Early Life and Acting Start
Bobby Cannavale was born on May 3, 1970, in Union City, New Jersey. His father was of Italian background, and his mother was Cuban, moving to the U.S. in 1960. He grew up in a Catholic family and went to St. Michael's Catholic School.
He discovered his love for acting early on. When he was 8, he got a main role in his school's play The Music Man. Later, he played a gangster in Guys and Dolls. These experiences made him want to perform even more.
When Bobby was 13, his parents divorced, and his family moved to Puerto Rico. After two years there, they settled in Margate, Florida. He attended Coconut Creek High School but left before finishing. He then moved back to New Jersey to live with his grandmother. This allowed him to be closer to New York City to start his acting career. He finished high school by going to summer school at Union Hill High School.
Bobby Cannavale started his acting career in theater, even without formal training. He got early movie roles in films like Night Falls on Manhattan (1997) and The Bone Collector (1999). He became widely known for playing Bobby Caffey in the TV series Third Watch for two seasons.
After Third Watch, he worked with Alan Arkin in 100 Centre Street (2001), a show written and directed by his father-in-law at the time, Sidney Lumet. In 2002, he joined the cast of Ally McBeal for its final episodes. He also appeared in the film The Station Agent (2003), where he played a man who becomes friends with someone who prefers to be alone.
From 2004 to 2006, Bobby had a recurring role on Will & Grace as Vince D'Angelo, the boyfriend of Will Truman. This role earned him an Emmy Award in 2005. He also appeared in movies like Shall We Dance? (2004) and Snakes on a Plane (2006). He made guest appearances in popular shows such as Sex and the City, Six Feet Under, and the Law & Order series.
Bobby Cannavale also lent his voice to the Ken Burns PBS documentary series The War, which told the story of World War II. He also read the audiobook versions of some novels. In 2008, he was nominated for a Tony Award for his role in the Broadway play Mauritius.
In 2012 and 2013, he guest-starred in Nurse Jackie and was nominated for an Emmy twice for this role. He also joined the cast of HBO's Boardwalk Empire, playing a villain named Gyp Rosetti. His performance in Boardwalk Empire was highly praised, and he won an Emmy Award for it in 2013. That same year, he played a clown named Lewis on Modern Family.
Since 2015, Bobby Cannavale has done voice-over work for Playing On Air, an organization that records short plays for public radio and podcasts. In 2020, he performed in the play Medea with his real-life partner, Rose Byrne. In 2021, he played Tony Hogburn in the Hulu miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers. In 2022, he starred as Dean Braddock in the Netflix series The Watcher.
