Mary Rose Byrne (born 24 July 1979) is an Australian actress. She started her acting journey in the film Dallas Doll (1994) when she was 15 years old. Throughout the 1990s, she appeared in Australian TV shows and films.

Rose Byrne became well-known for her role in The Goddess of 1967 (2000), which won her an award for best actress. She then moved into American movies, appearing in big films like Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002), Troy (2004), and 28 Weeks Later (2007).

She also starred as Ellen Parsons in the TV series Damages (2007–2012), which earned her nominations for major awards. Rose Byrne is also famous for her funny roles in comedies like Bridesmaids (2011), Neighbors (2014), and Spy (2015). She has also been in horror films like Insidious (2010) and superhero movies like X-Men: First Class (2011). More recently, she voiced characters in the Peter Rabbit movies and starred in the TV series Physical (2021–2023) and Platonic (2023).

Rose Byrne was born in Balmain, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. Her family has Irish and Scottish roots. Her mother, Jane, worked as a school administrator, and her father, Robin, was a statistician. Rose is the youngest of four children, with an older brother, George, and two older sisters, Alice and Lucy.

Her family was very supportive as her acting career grew. Rose started acting classes at age eight, joining the Australian Theatre for Young People. She tried to get into several big drama schools but wasn't accepted. Instead, she studied arts at University of Sydney. In 1999, she also studied acting at the Atlantic Theater Company in New York.

Rose Byrne got her first film role in Dallas Doll (1994) when she was 15. In the 1990s, she appeared in Australian TV shows like Wildside (1997) and Echo Point (1995). She also acted alongside Heath Ledger in the film Two Hands (1999).

Her first main role was in The Goddess of 1967 (2000), which won her the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival. In 2002, she made her first appearance in a Hollywood film, playing Dormé, a handmaiden, in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones. She also appeared in the thriller City of Ghosts.

In 2003, Rose Byrne starred in three Australian comedies: The Night We Called It a Day, The Rage in Placid Lake, and Take Away. For The Rage in Placid Lake, she was nominated for an AACTA Award for Best Actress. In the epic film Troy (2004), she played Briseis, a captured priestess. She also appeared in the thriller Wicker Park (2004).

In 2005, she was in the BBC TV drama Casanova. In 2006, she played a French aristocrat in Marie Antoinette and a medical examiner in the thriller The Dead Girl.

In 2007, Rose Byrne had important roles in two science fiction thrillers. She played a pilot in Sunshine and an army medical officer in 28 Weeks Later. While Sunshine didn't do well, 28 Weeks Later was a success.

In the same year, she started playing Ellen Parsons in the TV series Damages, alongside Glenn Close. Her acting was highly praised, and she received nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards. She was part of the show for all 59 episodes until it ended in 2012.

Her brother George is married to New Zealand actress Rose McIver, making them sisters-in-law. Rose Byrne was in a relationship with Australian actor Brendan Cowell for over six years, which ended in 2010. Since 2012, she has been in a relationship with American actor Bobby Cannavale. They have two sons, born in 2016 and 2017.
