X-Men: Apocalypse is a 2016 American superhero film. It was directed and produced by Bryan Singer. The story is based on the famous X-Men characters from Marvel Comics. This movie is the sixth main film in the X-Men film series. It is also the ninth movie in the series overall.

The film is a sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). It stars many well-known actors. These include James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence. In the movie, an ancient mutant named En Sabah Nur / Apocalypse wakes up in 1983. He wants to destroy modern civilization and rule the world. The X-Men must work together to stop him and his team of powerful mutants.

The movie was first announced in December 2013. Filming began in April 2015 in Montreal, Canada. It finished in August of the same year. X-Men: Apocalypse first showed in London on May 9, 2016. It was released in the United States on May 27, 2016. The film was shown in different formats like RealD 3D and IMAX 3D. Critics had mixed feelings about the movie. Many felt it was not as good as the previous film. A sequel, called Dark Phoenix, came out on June 7, 2019.

  • James McAvoy as Professor Charles Xavier:
    He is a mutant with amazing telepathic powers. Professor X can read and control minds. He founded Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. He leads the X-Men to protect both mutants and humans.
  • Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto:
    Erik is a mutant who can control magnetic fields and metal. He was once Professor X's best friend. However, he believes humans and mutants can't live together peacefully. He is famous for a big event that happened 10 years earlier.
    • Bill Milner appears as a Young Erik in old footage.
  • Jennifer Lawrence as Raven / Mystique:
    Raven is a mutant who can change her shape. She is known for saving a president's life. She was also Professor X's close friend and adoptive sister. She tries to help Erik when she hears about his troubles.
  • Oscar Isaac as En Sabah Nur / Apocalypse:
    He is believed to be the world's first mutant, born in ancient times. Apocalypse has many destructive powers. He can move things with his mind (telekinesis) and teleport. He can also make other mutants' powers stronger. He believes he must destroy old civilizations to help new ones grow. Oscar Isaac wore a heavy costume and makeup for this role.
  • Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy / Beast:
    Hank is a mutant with a furry, blue, beast-like appearance. He is very strong and agile. He teaches at Xavier's school and builds cool inventions. He also built the X-Jet, the X-Men's special plane.
  • Rose Byrne as Moira MacTaggert:
    Moira is a CIA agent. She met Professor X before, but he made her forget some memories. In this movie, they meet again almost like strangers.
  • Evan Peters as Peter Maximoff / Quicksilver:
    Peter is a mutant who can move incredibly fast. He is so fast that everything else seems to slow down. He is also Magneto's son.
  • Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers / Cyclops:
    Scott is a mutant who shoots powerful beams of energy from his eyes. He wears special glasses or a visor to control them. He is Havok's younger brother. Scott is learning to control his new powers.
  • Sophie Turner as Jean Grey:
    Jean is a mutant with strong telepathic and telekinetic powers. She is one of Professor X's best students. She is a bit scared of her own great power.
  • Olivia Munn as Psylocke:
    Psylocke is a mutant with psionic abilities. She can create a purple energy blade that can cut through metal. She is very skilled in fighting.
  • Kodi Smit-McPhee as Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler:
    Kurt is a German mutant who can teleport. He is one of Professor X's new students. He often brings a bit of fun and humor to the team.
  • Alexandra Shipp as Ororo Munroe / Storm:
    Ororo is a young mutant orphan who can control the weather. Apocalypse finds her in Cairo. She has a cool Mohawk hairstyle in the movie.
  • Lucas Till as Alex Summers / Havok:
    Alex is a mutant who can absorb energy and release it as powerful blasts. He is Cyclops's older brother.
  • Ben Hardy as Angel:
    Angel is a mutant with large, bird-like wings. He later gets metallic wings that can shoot sharp feather-like projectiles.
  • Lana Condor as Jubilee:
    Jubilee is a mutant student at Xavier's school. She can create bright, explosive energy plasmoids. She wears her famous yellow jacket.

Other characters include Carolina Bartczak as Magda Gurzsky, Erik's wife, and Tómas Lemarquis as Caliban, a mutant who can find other mutants. Wrestler "Giant" Gustav Claude Ouimet plays The Blob.

Hugh Jackman makes a special appearance as Logan / Wolverine. He is shown in his powerful Weapon X form. Director Bryan Singer also has a small role as a guard. Stan Lee, who helped create the X-Men, and his wife Joan B. Lee, appear as people watching nuclear missiles launch.

Music and Sounds

John Ottman, who worked on previous X-Men films, wrote the music for Apocalypse. The official soundtrack was released digitally in May 2016. The movie also features a special remix of Ludwig van Beethoven's seventh symphony. You can also hear popular songs from the 1980s, like "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" by Eurythmics.

Visual Effects Magic

Amazing visual effects brought the mutant powers and destruction to life. Companies like Moving Picture Company and Hydraulx worked on these effects. They made sure everything from mutant abilities to large-scale destruction looked real.

Movie Release

X-Men: Apocalypse first showed in London on May 9, 2016. It then opened in many countries around the world. It was released in the United States on May 27, 2016. You could watch it in different formats, including 3D and IMAX 3D. The movie was later available for home viewing on DVD and Blu-ray in October 2016. It also became available on The Walt Disney Company's streaming service Disney+ in July 2020.

What's Next? The Sequel

In May 2016, it was said that the next X-Men movie would be set in the 1990s. The movie's sequel, Dark Phoenix, was released on June 7, 2019.
