Sophie Belinda Turner (born 21 February 1996) is an English actress. She became famous for playing Sansa Stark in the HBO fantasy TV show Game of Thrones (2011–2019). For this role, she was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2019.
Sophie also appeared in the 2013 British TV movie The Thirteenth Tale. Her first movie role was in the thriller Another Me (2013). She was also in the action comedy Barely Lethal (2015). Later, she played a young Jean Grey / Phoenix in the X-Men movies (2016–2019).

Early Life and Education
Sophie Turner was born in Northampton, England, on 21 February 1996. Her mother, Sally, was a nursery school teacher. Her father, Andrew, worked for a company that delivers pallets. When she was two years old, her family moved to Chesterton, Warwickshire.
Sophie went to Warwick Prep School until she was 11. After that, she attended The King's High School for Girls. She joined the Playbox Theatre Company when she was just three years old. Sophie has two older brothers. She grew up in a big house near Leamington Spa. She said her childhood was "pretty fun" with pigsties and barns. While filming Game of Thrones, she had a tutor until she was 16. She did well in her school exams, getting good grades.
Acting Career Highlights
Sophie Turner was chosen to play Sansa Stark in the HBO fantasy show Game of Thrones in August 2009. Filming started in July 2010, when Sophie was 14. Sansa was her very first TV role. Her drama teacher encouraged her to try out for the part. She dyed her blonde hair red for the role. In later seasons, she started wearing wigs.
In 2012, she was nominated for an award for her acting as Sansa. She appeared in all eight seasons of Game of Thrones. Growing up on screen brought challenges for Sophie. She has spoken about facing difficulties during her teenage years in the public eye.
First Movie Roles
In 2013, Sophie got her first movie role in the independent thriller Another Me. This movie was based on a book by Catherine MacPhail. She also played Adeline March in the 2013 TV film The Thirteenth Tale. In 2013, she was cast in the comedy movie Barely Lethal. She starred alongside Hailee Steinfeld. The movie was released in May 2015.
Sophie also read the audiobook for a short story called ‘The Girl in the Mirror’. This story was part of a collection edited by George R. R. Martin. In 2014, she narrated the audiobook City of Heavenly Fire. That same year, she was the face of Karen Millen's "The Journey" campaign.
X-Men and Other Projects
Sophie played the mutant Jean Grey in X-Men: Apocalypse. This movie came out in May 2016. In summer 2016, she hosted a web video series called Powershift.
In March 2017, Sophie announced she was supporting Women for Women International. This group helps women who have survived war. In August 2017, Sophie shared that she believed her social media followers helped her get a role. She felt it was more about her online presence than her acting skills. In June 2017, she became the first international brand ambassador for Wella Hair.
In November 2017, Sophie was chosen to play Juliane Koepcke in the movie Girl Who Fell From the Sky. She also helped produce this movie. In March and April 2018, she filmed the independent movie Heavy. Sophie played Jean Grey again in the X-Men movie Dark Phoenix. This film was released in June 2019.
She has also appeared in print ads for the luxury brand Louis Vuitton. In September 2019, Sophie was cast in the thriller TV show Survive.
In 2022, Sophie had a small role as Erica in the teen comedy Do Revenge. Her character's reaction in one scene became very popular online. Sophie said she made the scene dramatic on purpose.
In 2024, Sophie starred in the ITV show Joan. She played the main character, Joan Hannington, a diamond thief. Outside of acting, Sophie is part of the cultural advisory board for Colossal Biosciences. She said working with them feels like "bringing a bit of fantasy to life." She was a speaker at South by Southwest London in 2025.
Personal Life
Sophie Turner started dating American singer Joe Jonas in 2016. They got engaged in October 2017. They were married on 1 May 2019 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple lived in New York City and Miami Beach for a while. They had a second wedding ceremony in Paris, France, on 29 June 2019. Sophie and Joe have two daughters. Their first daughter was born in July 2020, and their second in July 2022.
The song "Hesitate" by the Jonas Brothers was written by Joe Jonas as a love letter to Sophie. It is on their album Happiness Begins.
In September 2023, Joe Jonas filed for divorce from Sophie in Miami, Florida. Both Sophie and Joe confirmed this was a mutual decision on Instagram. Later that month, Sophie asked for their daughters to return to the UK. The family had registered the UK as their permanent home in April 2023. Joe and Sophie reached a temporary agreement about their children in October 2023. Their divorce was finalized in September 2024.
Since late 2023, Sophie has been in a relationship with Peregrine Pearson. He is the son of Michael Pearson, 4th Viscount Cowdray.
