Video facts for kids
Video is a cool technology that lets us record and watch moving pictures! Think of your favorite YouTube videos or movies – that's video in action. It captures images and sounds and saves them onto something like a computer file or an old-fashioned tape.
You might use a video camera to record your own videos, or watch a movie on a TV. Video is all around us, from the shows we stream to the clips we share with friends.

What is Video?
Video is a way to capture and show moving images. It's like taking many photos very quickly, one after another, and then playing them back fast enough that they look like they are moving. This creates the illusion of motion.
Video recordings can also include sound. This makes them even more like real life.
How Video Works
When you record a video, a special device, like a camera, captures light and turns it into electronic signals or digital data. This data is then saved onto a storage medium. This medium could be a memory card in your phone, a hard drive in a computer, or even an old videotape.
To watch a video, a player reads this saved data. It then turns it back into images and sound that you can see on a screen and hear through speakers.
Old Ways to Record Video
In the past, a common way to record video was using a videocassette recorder (VCR). These machines recorded television programmes onto special tapes called videotapes. A popular type of videotape was called VHS.
- VHS: This stood for Video Home System. VHS tapes were used a lot in homes during the 1980s and 1990s. People would record their favorite TV shows or movies onto these tapes.
- Analog Video: Most old VCRs and VHS tapes used an analog signal. This means the video information was stored as a continuous wave. Think of it like a sound wave.
New Ways to Record Video
Today, most video recording is done using digital recording. This is different from analog.
- Digital Video: In digital video, the images and sounds are turned into numbers (ones and zeros). This is the same way computers store information.
- Better Quality: Digital video often looks and sounds much clearer than analog video. It's also easier to copy and share without losing quality.
- Modern Devices: Your smartphone, digital cameras, and computers all record and play digital video.
Types of Video Content
The word "video" can also mean a short movie or clip.
- Video Clip: This is usually a short piece of video, often just a few minutes long. You see many video clips online, like funny moments or news highlights.
- Music Video: This is a special type of video clip made to go with a song. Music videos often feature the singer or band. Their main purpose is to help promote the song and the artist's album.
