Alexandrea "Alex" Borstein (born February 15, 1971) is an American actress, comedian, writer, and producer. She is famous for being the voice of Lois Griffin in the animated comedy show Family Guy. This role won her a Primetime Emmy Award.
Borstein also received praise for playing Susie Myerson in the show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel from 2017 to 2023. For this role, she won two Primetime Emmy Awards. She was also a main cast member on the comedy show MADtv and starred in the medical comedy Getting On.
She has appeared in many movies, including Bad Santa (2003), Ted (2012), A Million Ways to Die in the West (2014), and The Bad Guys (2022).

Early Life and Education
Alex Borstein was born on February 15, 1971, in Highland Park, Illinois, near Chicago. She grew up in Deerfield, Illinois, and later moved with her family to Northridge, California. She has two older brothers. Her parents, Irv and Judy Borstein, both worked in mental health.
Borstein's family background is diverse. Her grandmother survived the Holocaust (a terrible event during World War II where many Jewish people were killed). Her grandmother was from Budapest, Hungary, and moved to the United States after the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Borstein is Jewish and feels it is important to carry on her family's traditions.
She graduated from Chatsworth High School in 1989. After high school, she went to San Francisco State University, where she studied rhetoric, which is the art of public speaking and writing.
Career
First Steps in Comedy and MADtv
Borstein began her career by training in improvisational comedy, which is a type of acting where performers make up scenes on the spot. She met her future husband, Jackson Douglas, at the comedy theater. They started working together as writers for animated shows like The Spooktacular New Adventures of Casper and Pinky and the Brain.
In 1996, she was the voice of Queen Machina in the TV show Power Rangers Zeo. A year later, in 1997, she joined the cast of the sketch comedy show MADtv. She became known for playing funny characters like Ms. Swan, the owner of a nail salon.
Success with Family Guy

While working on MADtv, Borstein met Seth MacFarlane, the creator of Family Guy. He asked her to be the voice of the mother, Lois Griffin. Family Guy first aired in 1999. Besides voicing Lois, Borstein also voices other characters on the show, like Tricia Takanawa, and works as a producer and writer. Her work on the show earned her a Primetime Emmy Award in 2013.
During this time, she also had small roles in movies. She played a school principal in The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003) and appeared in Good Night, and Good Luck (2005).

Borstein has appeared in many comedy films, such as Killers (2010), Ted (2012), and the animated movie The Bad Guys (2022).
From 2013 to 2015, she starred in the HBO comedy Getting On as a nurse named Dawn Forchette.
Her biggest recent success came from the show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which was on Amazon Prime Video from 2017 to 2023. She played Susie Myerson, the tough but loyal manager of a stand-up comedian. This role was very popular with critics and audiences, and she won two Primetime Emmy Awards for her performance.
Personal Life
Borstein met actor and writer Jackson Douglas while they were both performing comedy. They married in 1999 and were together until 2017. They have a son and a daughter.
Borstein is a carrier of hemophilia, a medical condition that affects blood clotting. She supports the National Hemophilia Foundation to help raise awareness.
