Juan Camilo Mouriño worked closely with Felipe Calderón for many years. When Calderón was the Secretary of Energy, Mouriño was his assistant.
During Calderón's campaign to become president, Mouriño was a key coordinator. After Calderón won, he chose Mouriño to lead his transition team. This team helped prepare for the new government.
On December 1, 2006, President Calderón appointed Mouriño as the Chief of the Presidency's Office. This meant he was a top advisor to the president.

Tragic Plane Crash
On November 4, 2008, Juan Camilo Mouriño was traveling in a government plane. The plane was a Learjet 45. Sadly, it crashed into a busy street in Mexico City.
All nine people on board the plane died in the accident. This included Mouriño and another important politician, José Luis Santiago Vasconcelos. The crash also caused fatalities and injuries on the ground.
Investigation into the Crash
After the crash, investigators found the plane's two black boxes. These boxes record flight data and cockpit conversations. They were sent to the United States for analysis.
In November 2009, the Mexican government announced the main cause of the crash. It was found that the pilots did not slow down enough. They flew too close to the strong air currents (wake turbulence) left by a larger 767 plane. This caused the Learjet to lose control and crash.
