Martin John Christopher Freeman (born 8 September 1971) is an English actor famous for playing key roles in some of the biggest TV shows and movies. He has won many awards for his acting, including two Emmy Awards and a BAFTA Award.
You might know him as Dr. John Watson in the TV series Sherlock, or as the young Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit movie trilogy. He also played Tim Canterbury in the comedy show The Office.
Freeman has appeared in many other popular films. These include the holiday movie Love Actually, the comedies Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and the science-fiction adventure The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Early life and family
Martin Freeman was born in Aldershot, Hampshire, England. He was the youngest of five children. His parents separated when he was young, and his father, a naval officer, passed away from a heart attack when Martin was 10.
Freeman's grandfather fought in World War II and was killed in action at the Battle of Dunkirk. His great-grandfather was born blind and worked as a piano tuner.
He was raised in the Catholic faith. For college, he studied media at Brooklands College. His older brother, Tim, was a singer in a band called Frazier Chorus.
Acting career
To become an actor, Freeman went to the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. He started his career appearing in TV shows, plays, and radio productions. His big break came when he played Tim Canterbury in the popular mockumentary series The Office from 2001 to 2003.
He also acted in movies like Ali G Indahouse and Love Actually. Over time, he took on more serious roles, such as playing Lord Shaftesbury in a BBC historical drama.
Worldwide fame with Sherlock and The Hobbit
From 2010 to 2017, Freeman played Dr. John Watson in the BBC show Sherlock. The show was a modern version of the famous Sherlock Holmes stories. It was a huge hit with critics and audiences. For this role, Freeman won a BAFTA Award and an Emmy Award.
His fame grew even more when he was cast as the main character, Bilbo Baggins, in Peter Jackson's three-part movie series, The Hobbit. The films, released between 2012 and 2014, were based on the famous book by J. R. R. Tolkien. His performance earned him several awards.

In 2014, Freeman starred in the first season of the crime drama series Fargo. He played an insurance salesman named Lester Nygaard. His work on the show earned him nominations for a Golden Globe Award and an Emmy Award.
In 2016, he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Everett K. Ross, an agent for the CIA. He first appeared in Captain America: Civil War. He later returned for Black Panther in 2018, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in 2022, and the TV series Secret Invasion in 2023.
Recent work
Freeman continues to act in a wide variety of projects. In 2017, he starred in the horror film Cargo and a play called Labour of Love in London.
Since 2020, he has starred in the comedy series Breeders, which he also helped create. In 2022, he began playing a police officer in the drama The Responder, a role for which he won an International Emmy Award.
Personal life
Freeman lives in London. For 16 years, he was in a relationship with actress Amanda Abbington, and they have a son and a daughter. The couple appeared in several shows together, including Sherlock. They separated in 2016.
He is a big fan of soul and jazz music. He even helped create a jazz music collection called "Jazz on the Corner". He is a supporter of the Labour Party in the United Kingdom.
