Justin Paul Theroux (pronounced thə-ROH; born August 10, 1971) is an American actor and filmmaker. He became well-known for his work with director David Lynch. This included the mystery film Mulholland Drive (2001) and the thriller Inland Empire (2006).
He has also appeared in many other films. These include Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997), American ... (2000), and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (2003). Other notable roles were in Strangers with Candy (2005), Miami Vice (2006), and Wanderlust (2012). More recently, he was in The Girl on the Train (2016), The Spy Who ... Me (2018), On the Basis of Sex (2018), Bumblebee (2018), Lady and the Tramp (2019), and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024).
Justin Theroux has also written screenplays for movies. These include the action comedy Tropic Thunder (2008) and the superhero film Iron Man 2 (2010). He also wrote for the musical comedy drama Rock of Ages (2012). He directed his first film, the romantic comedy Dedication, in 2007.
On television, Theroux starred as Kevin Garvey in the HBO mystery drama series The Leftovers (2014–2017). His performance earned him much praise and a nomination for a Critics' Choice Television Award. He also played Dr. James Mantleray in the Netflix comedy drama miniseries Maniac (2018). From 2021 to 2023, he played Allie Fox in the Apple TV+ show The Mosquito Coast. This show is based on a book written by his uncle, Paul Theroux. Early Life and Education
Justin Theroux was born on August 10, 1971, in Washington, D.C.. His mother, Phyllis Grissim Theroux, is a writer. His father, Eugene Albert Theroux, is a lawyer.
Justin is related to several other famous writers. He is the nephew of travel writer Paul Theroux, novelist Alexander Theroux, and author Peter Theroux. He is also the cousin of British journalists Louis and Marcel Theroux. His family background includes French-Canadian and Italian heritage from his father's side.
Theroux went to Lafayette Elementary School and Annunciation School. He also attended the Field School. He first started acting when he was in high school at the Buxton School in Williamstown, Massachusetts. He later graduated from Bennington College in 1993. He earned a degree in visual arts and drama.
Acting and Filmmaking Career
Justin Theroux began his film career in 1996. His first movie was Mary Harron's I Shot Andy Warhol. Since then, he has acted in plays on Broadway and in many off-Broadway shows. He has also been in several comedy films. These include Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle, The Baxter, Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, and Zoolander.

Theroux has also taken on more serious roles. He appeared in the film American .... He was also in movies based on popular TV shows, like Strangers With Candy. He worked with director Michael Mann in Miami Vice. He also starred in David Lynch's films Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire.
In 2003, Theroux was in a music video for the band Muse. The song was called "Hysteria". He has also appeared on television shows. These include The District, Alias, Ally McBeal, and Six Feet Under. He also guest-starred in two episodes of ... and the City, playing different characters.
In 2006, Theroux directed his first movie, Dedication. It was shown at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. He chose the band Deerhoof to create the music for the film. Theroux also acted in two other films at the festival that year. These were Broken English and The Ten. In The Ten, he played Jesus Christ.
Theroux helped write the movie Tropic Thunder with Ben Stiller. He also had a small role in a behind-the-scenes mockumentary for the film.

Theroux returned to acting in the 2011 film Your Highness. He played Leezar, an evil wizard. In 2012, he starred in the comedy Wanderlust. In this movie, he played the leader of a hippie community.
In 2013, Theroux was chosen for the main role in HBO's TV pilot The Leftovers. HBO later ordered a full season of 10 episodes. The show started on June 29, 2014. It is based on a book by Tom Perrotta. The story follows people in a town after mysterious disappearances happen worldwide. Theroux received great reviews for his acting throughout the show's three seasons.
Theroux also co-wrote the movie Zoolander 2 (2016). He also played his character, Evil DJ, again in the film. In 2017, he voiced the character Lord Garmadon in The Lego Ninjago Movie.
In 2018, Theroux played a smart neurochemist named James Mantleray. This was in the Netflix comedy drama miniseries Maniac. He starred alongside Emma Stone and Jonah Hill.
In 2019, Theroux helped produce the ABC television event Live in Front of a Studio Audience. He worked with Norman Lear, Jimmy Kimmel, and Will Ferrell. Theroux won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for producing this event. He also voiced Tramp in the Disney+ live-action film Lady and the Tramp. This was a remake of the 1955 animated movie.
In 2021, Theroux played Allie Fox in the Apple TV+ series The Mosquito Coast. Allie Fox is a brilliant inventor and a strong idealist. The show is based on the 1981 novel written by Justin Theroux's uncle, Paul Theroux. Theroux also worked as an executive producer for the series.
In 2024, Theroux co-starred in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. This is a sequel to the 1988 movie Beetlejuice.
Personal Life
Justin Theroux was in a relationship with stylist Heidi Bivens from 1997 to 2011. He then started dating actress Jennifer Aniston in 2011. They had worked together on the film Wanderlust. They got engaged in August 2012. They had a wedding ceremony on August 5, 2015. On February 15, 2018, Theroux and Aniston announced they had separated at the end of 2017. In August 2024, Theroux became engaged to actress Nicole Brydon Bloom. The couple married in March 2025.
