His Career in Film
Starting Out in London
In the mid-1960s, Mann moved to London to study filmmaking. He spent seven years in the United Kingdom. During this time, he went to film school and worked on commercials. He worked alongside other famous directors like Alan Parker and Ridley Scott.
In 1968, he filmed a documentary called Insurrection about the student protests in Paris. This footage was shown on NBC's First Tuesday news program. He then made a short film called Jaunpuri, which won an award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1970.
Moving to Television
Mann returned to the United States in 1971. He directed a documentary about a road trip called 17 Days Down the Line. Later, he started writing for TV shows. He wrote four episodes of Starsky and Hutch and the pilot for Vega$.
He also worked on a show called Police Story. This show focused on showing the real lives of police officers. Working on it taught Mann how important it was to do good research to make his work feel real.
First Big Projects
Mann's first feature-length project was a TV movie called The Jericho Mile. It was shown in movie theaters in Europe. This film won an Emmy Award for outstanding writing in 1979.
He also became an executive producer for popular TV shows like Miami Vice and Crime Story. As an executive producer, he helped manage the shows and bring them to life.
Directing Movies
Mann's first movie as a director was Thief (1981). It starred James Caan. The film showed a very real picture of thieves in New York City and Chicago. Mann even used real former burglars to make sure the scenes were as accurate as possible.
His next film was The Keep (1983), a supernatural thriller set during World War II. Even though it didn't do well at first, many fans now consider it a cult classic.
Gaining Wide Recognition
In 1992, Mann became widely known for his film The Last of the Mohicans. This was an epic historical drama based on a famous novel. It starred Daniel Day-Lewis and was set during the French and Indian War. Critics praised Mann's directing, saying he was a master of action and emotional stories.
He then directed the crime drama Heat (1995). This movie starred Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, and Val Kilmer. It was a big success with critics. They called it a "sleek, accomplished piece of work" with "extraordinarily rich characters."
In 1999, Mann made The Insider. This film was about a true story involving a whistleblower from the tobacco industry. Russell Crowe and Al Pacino starred in it. The movie showed off Mann's unique style and earned him many awards nominations, including one for Best Director at the Academy Awards.
Recent Work
For his film Ali (2001), starring Will Smith, Mann started using digital cameras. He continued this for his action thriller Collateral (2004). In Collateral, Tom Cruise played a hitman, which was a different kind of role for him. Mann shot many night scenes digitally to get more detail. Jamie Foxx was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Collateral.
In 2004, Mann also produced The Aviator, a film about the life of Howard Hughes. After Collateral, Mann directed a movie version of Miami Vice, based on the TV show he had produced.
Mann has also directed commercials for companies like Mercedes-Benz and Nike. In 2009, he wrote and directed Public Enemies. This movie was about famous criminals during the Great Depression, like John Dillinger, played by Johnny Depp.
In 2015, Mann directed Blackhat, an action thriller about a hacker. More recently, in 2022, he directed the first episode of the crime series Tokyo Vice. In the same year, he released a novel called Heat 2, which continues the story of his 1995 film Heat. In 2023, Mann directed Ferrari, a film about the famous car maker, starring Adam Driver.
Directorial Style
Michael Mann's films often have dark, powerfully lit night scenes and unique music. For example, he used Tangerine Dream in Thief. He also often shows characters making important decisions while looking out over large bodies of water.
Many of his films focus on stories where criminals are against those who try to catch them. These films often show that both sides, the criminals and the police, are similar in some ways. They each live by their own rules and often understand each other.
Mann's movies are also known for their very realistic gun sounds. He prefers to use the actual sounds recorded during filming, rather than mixing them later. His actors often go to special training camps to learn how to handle weapons and fire blanks that sound like real bullets. This helps make the action scenes feel very real.
