How United Artists Began
In 1919, four big names in movies decided to create their own company. These founders were Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, and D. W. Griffith. They were tired of other studios telling them what to do. They wanted to control their own films.
This new company, United Artists, let them make movies their way. It was a big step for artists in Hollywood. They could produce and distribute their films independently.
Who Owns United Artists Now
Over the years, United Artists has been owned by many different companies. In 1967, a company called Transamerica Corporation bought it. Later, in 1981, United Artists joined with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM). They formed a new company called MGM/UA Entertainment Co..
United Artists has changed hands many times since then. In 2006, actor Tom Cruise and his partner Paula Wagner worked with MGM to bring United Artists back. Today, United Artists is fully owned by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc..
United Artists Records
United Artists Records was a record label that started in 1957. It was created by Max E. Youngstein. The main reason it began was to release music from United Artists movies. These were often the soundtracks of their films.
After a while, the record label started to release other kinds of music too. It became a place for many different artists to share their songs.
