  • Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa: Rocky works for a loan shark during the day. At night, he is a semi-professional boxer. He gets an amazing chance to fight for the heavyweight boxing title.
  • Talia Shire as Adrian Pennino: Adrian is a quiet clerk at a pet store. She becomes Rocky's girlfriend and supports him as he trains for his big fight.
  • Burt Young as Paulie Pennino: Paulie is Adrian's brother. He works at a meat-packing plant. He lets Rocky train in the freezer, which is a famous scene in the movie.
  • Carl Weathers as Apollo Creed: Apollo is Rocky's opponent and the current heavyweight boxing champion. This character was inspired by the real-life boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
  • Burgess Meredith as Mickey Goldmill: Mickey is Rocky's manager and trainer. He used to be a boxer himself in the 1920s. He owns the local boxing gym where Rocky trains.
  • Thayer David as George Jergens: George is the person who organizes the boxing matches. He is known for promoting fights all over the world.
  • Joe Spinnell as Tony Gazzo: Tony is the loan shark who employs Rocky.

You might also spot famous boxer Joe Frazier in a small role. Because the movie had a low budget, some of Sylvester Stallone's family members also appeared in small parts. This movie was also the first time Michael Dorn (who later became famous as Worf in Star Trek) acted in a film.
