Orion Pictures (also known as Orion Releasing LLC) is an American company that makes and releases movies. It is owned by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, a famous movie studio. Orion Pictures made many films from 1978 to 1999.

Some of the movies released by Orion Pictures were very successful. Four of them even won the top award, the Academy Awards for Best Picture. These amazing films were Amadeus (in 1984), Platoon (in 1986), Dances with Wolves (in 1990), and The Silence of the Lambs (in 1991).

History of Orion Pictures

Orion Pictures started making movies in 1978. After many years, in 1997, another big movie company called MGM bought Orion.

Later, in 2013, MGM decided to use the Orion name again, but this time for television shows. Then, in 2014, MGM brought back Orion Pictures to make movies once more.

Famous Movies from Orion

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Orion Pictures was well-known for its action-packed RoboCop movies. The first RoboCop film came out in 1987. Its sequel, RoboCop 2, was released in 1990. The third movie in the series, RoboCop 3, came out in November 1993.

During the same time, Orion also released the first two Terminator movies. The first one was in 1984, and the second was in 1991. Both of these popular films starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator character.

Recent Changes

On February 5, 2019, MGM and another company called Annapurna Pictures made a change to their movie distribution company, Mirror. They changed its name to United Artists Releasing. This new company helps distribute movies to theaters.
