Park Ji-min (born October 13, 1995), known simply as Jimin, is a famous South Korean singer, songwriter, and dancer. He is best known as a member of the global K-pop group BTS. Jimin joined BTS in 2013, under the company Big Hit Entertainment.

Jimin has released several solo songs as part of BTS's albums. These include "Lie" (2016), "Serendipity" (2017), and "Filter" (2020). All these songs were very popular in South Korea. He also released his own song, "Promise," in 2018. In 2022, he sang a duet called "With You" with Ha Sung-woon for a TV show.

In 2023, Jimin released his first solo album, Face. This album was a huge success, reaching number one in South Korea and Japan. It also reached number two on the US Billboard 200 chart. This made him the highest-charting Korean solo artist on that list. The song "Like Crazy" from the album became the first song by a Korean solo artist to reach number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 2024, he released his second album, Muse, and its main song "Who" also topped global charts.

Early Life and School

Park Ji-min was born on October 13, 1995, in Busan, South Korea. He grew up with his mother, father, and younger brother. As a child, he went to Hodong Elementary School and Yonsan Middle School in Busan.

During middle school, Jimin learned different dance styles like popping and locking at Just Dance Academy. Before becoming a K-pop trainee, he studied modern dance at Busan High School of Arts. He was a top student in his dance class. A teacher suggested he audition for an entertainment company, which led him to Big Hit Entertainment. After passing his auditions in 2012, he moved to Korean Arts High School and graduated in 2014.

Jimin continued his education, graduating from Global Cyber University in 2020. He studied Broadcasting and Entertainment. In 2021, he also started studying for a master's degree at Hanyang Cyber University.

Jimin was the last person to join the group that would become BTS. He trained for only six months before his debut, which is a very short time in K-pop. On June 13, 2013, he officially debuted as a singer and dancer in BTS. Their first song was "No More Dream."

As part of BTS, Jimin released three popular solo songs: "Lie," "Serendipity," and "Filter."

  • "Lie" (2016) was part of the album Wings. It was known for its dramatic and emotional sound.
  • "Serendipity" (2017) was from the album Love Yourself: Her. This song was soft and sweet, talking about the joy of love.
  • "Filter" (2020) was on the album Map of the Soul: 7. It had a Latin pop feel and showed different sides of Jimin's personality.

Jimin also helped write and produce the song "Friends" on the Map of the Soul: 7 album. This song was later used in the Marvel Studios movie Eternals.

His solo songs have been very successful. "Serendipity" and "Lie" both had over 50 million streams on Spotify. Jimin was the first Korean artist to have three solo songs reach this many streams. These songs were also among the most streamed BTS songs in the United Kingdom. In 2019, "Serendipity" became the first solo music video by a BTS member to reach 100 million views on YouTube.

In 2018, Jimin and his bandmates received the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit from the President of South Korea. This award recognized their efforts in promoting Korean culture worldwide. In 2021, the President also made Jimin and BTS "Special Presidential Envoys." This means they help represent South Korea and its culture around the world.

Jimin also appeared on several TV shows in 2016, like Hello Counselor and Please Take Care of My Refrigerator. He was also a special host on music shows like Show! Music Core and M Countdown. In December 2016, he performed a special dance duet at the KBS Song Festival with Taemin from the group Shinee.

On December 30, 2018, Jimin released "Promise," his first solo song. He shared it for free on BTS's SoundCloud page. "Promise" broke records, getting 8.5 million streams in its first 24 hours. It became the most streamed song ever on SoundCloud by 2021. Jimin co-wrote the song, which is a soft pop ballad. He released another solo song, "Christmas Love," in 2020, about his childhood holiday memories. In 2022, he released "With You" for the TV show Our Blues.

It was a huge success, with its song "Like Crazy" becoming the first song by a South Korean solo artist to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

In December 2023, Jimin released the digital song "Closer Than This." This song was a special gift to BTS fans, thanking them for their support. Artistic Style

Jimin's singing voice is often described as delicate and sweet. He is known as an amazing dancer in BTS and in K-pop. People praise his smooth and elegant movements and his charm on stage. Jimin has said he aims to be excellent at both dancing and singing. He wants to perform many different types of music.

He has shared that singer Rain inspired him to become a singer and performer.

Impact and Influence

Jimin is a very popular idol. In surveys by Gallup Korea, he was ranked among the most popular idols. He was number one in 2018 and 2019, being the only idol to top the survey for two years in a row. He was also one of the most tweeted-about celebrities and musicians globally in 2018.

In 2019, Jimin received an award for performing a traditional Korean fan dance called buchaechum at the 2018 Melon Music Awards. This helped share Korean culture with more people. He has also been recognized for consistently being a top-ranked idol in brand reputation surveys.

Many K-pop idols look up to Jimin as a role model. They try to learn from his dance style and stage presence. Because of this, media outlets have called him the "Idol of Idols." Artists like Hyunjin of Stray Kids and Wooyoung of Ateez have mentioned him as an influence.

Jimin's influence goes beyond K-pop. In 2019, famous director Gus Van Sant said he wanted to work with Jimin. In 2021, Olympic figure skater Yuzuru Hanyu said Jimin inspired his dance moves.
