Charles Otto Puth Jr. (born December 2, 1991) is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He first became known when his song covers went viral on YouTube. This led to him performing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and signing with the record label eleveneleven in 2011.
In 2015, Puth signed with Atlantic Records and released his first single, "Marvin Gaye", featuring Meghan Trainor. That same year, he helped write and produce the song "See You Again" with Wiz Khalifa. The song was a huge success, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It earned him a Golden Globe nomination and three Grammy Award nominations.
Puth's first album, Nine Track Mind (2016), included the hit song "We Don't Talk Anymore" with Selena Gomez. His second album, Voicenotes (2018), was also successful and featured the popular single "Attention". His third album, Charlie (2022), also performed well and included the songs "Light Switch" and "Left and Right".
Besides his own music, Puth has written and produced songs for other artists. In 2021, he co-wrote and produced the hit song "Stay" for The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber.

Early Life and Education
Charles Otto Puth Jr. was born on December 2, 1991, in Rumson, New Jersey. His mother, Debra, was a music teacher, and his father, Charles Sr., was a builder and real estate agent. He has two younger twin siblings, Stephen and Mikaela.
When he was two years old, a dog bite left a permanent scar on his right eyebrow. His mother introduced him to classical music and taught him piano when he was four. At age 10, he began studying jazz. By age 12, he was part of a youth jazz group at the Count Basie Theatre.
In the sixth grade, Puth recorded and produced a Christmas album called Have a Very Charlie Christmas. He sold it door-to-door and made $600. He attended Holy Cross School and Forrestdale Middle School before graduating from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in 2010. He also attended the Manhattan School of Music Pre-College program. In 2013, he graduated from the Berklee College of Music, where he studied music production and engineering.
Music Career
2009–2014: YouTube and Early Projects
In 2009, at age 17, Puth started a YouTube channel called Charlies Vlogs. He posted comedy videos and acoustic covers of popular songs. He also created theme songs and jingles for other YouTubers.
In 2011, Puth won an online singing competition called Can You Sing? with his version of Adele's "Someone like You". After seeing his performance, Ellen DeGeneres signed him to her record label, eleveneleven. He performed on her show but left the label in late 2012.
Puth continued to write music for other online personalities. He also released his own music, including an extended play (EP) called Ego in 2013. In 2014, he co-wrote the song "Celebrate" for Pitbull's album Globalization.
2015–2016: "See You Again" and First Album
In early 2015, Puth signed with Atlantic Records. His first single, "Marvin Gaye" featuring Meghan Trainor, became a hit in several countries.
He then co-wrote and performed on "See You Again" with Wiz Khalifa. The song was a tribute to actor Paul Walker for the movie Furious 7. It was number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 12 weeks. The song received three Grammy nominations, including Song of the Year.
Puth's debut album, Nine Track Mind, was released in January 2016. It included the hit single "One Call Away". The album reached the top 10 in the U.S. and the U.K. Another popular song from the album was "We Don't Talk Anymore" featuring Selena Gomez.
2017–2018: The Voicenotes Album
In April 2017, Puth released "Attention", the first single from his second album, Voicenotes. The song became his highest-charting solo single, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100. Other singles from the album included "How Long" and "Done for Me" featuring Kehlani.
Voicenotes was released on May 11, 2018. Critics gave it positive reviews, and it reached number four on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. To support the album, Puth went on the Voicenotes Tour with special guest Hailee Steinfeld.
2019–Present: The Charlie Album and Other Projects
In 2019, Puth released three singles: "I Warned Myself", "Mother", and "Cheating on You". However, he later decided to scrap the album he was working on because he didn't like the music.
In 2021, Puth co-wrote and co-produced the song "Stay" for The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber. The song was a massive success, hitting number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
Puth began sharing his creative process on TikTok, which went viral. This led to the release of "Light Switch" in January 2022. It was the first single from his third album, Charlie. He followed it with the singles "That's Hilarious" and "Left and Right" featuring Jungkook of BTS. The album Charlie was released on October 7, 2022.
In 2023, Puth released the single "That's Not How This Works" with the duo Dan + Shay. A remix featuring Sabrina Carpenter was released later. In August 2023, he released "Lipstick" as the first single from his upcoming fourth album. In May 2024, he was featured on the Stray Kids' single "Lose My Breath".
Taylor Swift mentioned Puth in her 2024 song "The Tortured Poets Department", singing, "We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist." This brought him a lot of media attention. Puth then released a new single called "Hero" in May 2024. On May 30, 2025, Puth appeared on the tenth season of the Chinese TV show Singer.
Personal Life
Puth has shared that he was bullied in school. He has also talked about the pressures of fame and how he uses music as a way to cope.
In 2022, he began dating Brooke Sansone, a family friend he had known for a long time. They announced their engagement on September 7, 2023, and got married one year later on September 7, 2024.
