Charles Otto Puth Jr. (born December 2, 1991), known as Charlie Puth, is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer. He became famous by sharing his song covers on YouTube.
In 2011, Puth signed with the record label eleveneleven after performing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He also helped write and produce songs for other artists. Later, he signed with Atlantic Records and Artist Partner Group.
His first single, "Marvin Gaye" (featuring Meghan Trainor), came out in 2015. That same year, he was featured on Wiz Khalifa's song "See You Again". This song was a huge hit, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 for 12 weeks. It also earned him a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.
"Marvin Gaye" was on Puth's first album, Nine Track Mind (2016). This album made it into the top ten on the Billboard 200 and UK Albums Chart. Another popular song from the album was "We Don't Talk Anymore" (featuring Selena Gomez), which reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100.
His second album, Voicenotes (2018), was also very successful. It included the hit song "Attention", which reached the top five. Puth's third album, Charlie (2022), also made it into the top ten. Songs like "Light Switch" and "Left and Right" from this album were popular.

Early Life and Education
Charles Otto Puth Jr. was born on December 2, 1991, in Rumson, New Jersey. His mother, Debra, was a music teacher. His father, Charles Otto Puth Sr., worked as a builder. Charlie has two younger twin siblings, Stephen and Mikaela.
When he was two years old, Charlie had a dog-bite accident that left a scar on his right eyebrow. His mother introduced him to classical music, and he started learning piano at age four. By age 10, he began studying jazz. When he was 12, he joined a summer jazz group. He even played in a Charlie Brown production at the Count Basie Theatre.
In sixth grade, Charlie recorded and produced a Christmas album called Have a Very Charlie Christmas. He sold it door-to-door and made $600.
He went to Holy Cross School and Forrestdale Middle School. He graduated from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in 2010. During his middle and high school years, he also studied jazz piano and classical music at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division. In 2013, Puth graduated from Berklee College of Music, where he studied music production and engineering.
Music Career
Early Days (2009–2014)
In September 2009, Charlie Puth started his own YouTube channel called Charlies Vlogs. He posted funny videos and acoustic covers of songs. In December 2010, he released his first independent music collection, The Otto Tunes.
In 2011, he won an online video contest by Perez Hilton called Can You Sing?. He sang Adele's "Someone like You" with Emily Luther. After seeing their performance, Ellen DeGeneres signed Puth and Luther to her record label, eleveneleven. They performed the song on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Puth released another independent music collection, Ego, in October 2013. He also wrote songs and jingles for other popular YouTube personalities. For example, he wrote the theme song for Shane Dawson's podcast and jingles for the SHAYTARDS family vlogs. In 2014, he helped write the song "Celebrate" for Pitbull's album Globalization.
Breakthrough Success (2015–2016)
In early 2015, Charlie Puth signed with APG/Atlantic. His first single, "Marvin Gaye", featuring Meghan Trainor, came out in February 2015. This song became very popular, topping charts in New Zealand, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.
Puth also wrote, co-produced, and sang on "See You Again" with Wiz Khalifa. This song was a tribute to the late Paul Walker and was part of the Furious 7 movie soundtrack. "See You Again" was a massive hit, staying at number one on the Hot 100 chart for 12 weeks. It was nominated for three Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year. It also received a nomination for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.
In March 2015, Puth appeared in Meghan Trainor's music video for "Dear Future Husband". On May 1, 2015, he released a five-song collection called Some Type of Love. He also worked on songs for other artists, like "Slow Motion" for Trey Songz.
His first album, Nine Track Mind, was released on January 29, 2016. The album reached number six on the Billboard 200. Puth then went on his first concert tour, the Nine Track Mind Tour, in March 2016.
Voicenotes Era (2017–2018)

On April 21, 2017, Puth released "Attention". This song became his highest-charting solo single on the Billboard Hot 100. The second single from his album Voicenotes was "How Long", released in October 2017.
Puth also worked with One Direction's Liam Payne on the song "Bedroom Floor". In 2018, he was featured on G-Eazy's single "Sober". He released "If You Leave Me Now" featuring Boyz II Men in January 2018.
Voicenotes was released on May 11, 2018. Critics generally liked the album, and it reached number four on the US Billboard 200. Puth went on the Voicenotes Tour in 2018, with Hailee Steinfeld as a special guest.
Recent Music (2019–Present)
In 2019, Puth released singles like "I Warned Myself", "Mother", and "Cheating on You". However, he later said he didn't really like the music he released that year.
He continued to work on music in 2020. He played keyboard on four songs for the Ozzy Osbourne album Ordinary Man. He also featured on the Lennon Stella song "Summer Feelings" for the Scoob! movie soundtrack. He released his own song "Girlfriend" in June.
In July 2021, the Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber released "Stay", which Puth co-wrote and co-produced. This song hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
In September 2021, Puth released "After All" with Elton John for John's album The Lockdown Sessions. Around this time, he started sharing videos on TikTok where he showed how he combined random sounds into pop songs. This led to the release of "Light Switch" in January 2022, the first single from his third album, Charlie. Other singles from the album included "That's Hilarious" and "Left and Right" featuring Jungkook. Charlie was released on October 7, 2022.
More recently, Puth has collaborated with other artists. In March 2023, he released "That's Not How This Works" with music duo Dan + Shay. He also featured on "Angel Pt. 2" with Jimin and Jvke in June 2023. In August 2023, he released "Lipstick" as the first song from his upcoming fourth album. He also featured on Stray Kids' song "Lose My Breath" in May 2024.
In 2024, Taylor Swift mentioned Charlie Puth in her song "The Tortured Poets Department". After this, Puth released a new song called "Hero" in May 2024.
Personal Life
Growing up, Charlie Puth faced challenges at school. He has shared that he sometimes found it difficult to adjust to his growing fame and busy schedule. He uses music as a way to express his feelings and experiences.
In 2017, Puth started working with the clothing brand Hollister Co.. He has said that seeing Justin Bieber become famous through YouTube inspired him to try the same path.
In 2022, he began dating Brooke Sansone, who was an old family friend. They got engaged in September 2023 and married in September 2024.
