SHINee is a popular South Korean boy band. The group started with five members: Onew, Key, Jonghyun, Minho, and Taemin. They were formed by SM Entertainment, a big music company. SHINee first appeared on May 25, 2008. Their first song was "Noona Neomu Yeppeo (Replay)". This means "Older Sister/Woman, You're So Pretty".
SHINee is known for its 'contemporary' style. This means they are often the first to show new trends. They bring new styles in music, dance, and fashion. They have won many awards and have lots of fans in Asia. After their first album, they released their second mini-album, "Romeo", on May 25, 2009. On December 18, 2017, Jonghyun passed away. However, their fans, called Shawol, still think of SHINee as five members forever.

History
2008: Their Start
In May 2008, news came out about SM Entertainment's new group, Shinee. On May 23, their first mini-album, Replay, was released. Replay quickly became popular. It sold many copies in South Korea.
On June 7, 2008, Shinee performed at the Dream Concert. Many famous Korean stars were there. The group won their first award on June 22, 2008. It was the "Rookie of the Month" award. Shinee also took part in the SMTown Live '08 concert. They performed with other artists from their company. On August 23, 2008, Shinee won the "Hot New Star" award.
Shinee released their first full album, The Shinee World, on August 28, 2008. The album was very successful. The first song from the album was "Sanso Gateun Neo (Love Like Oxygen)". On September 18, 2008, this song became the number one song on M! Countdown. Shinee also won the "Mutizen" award for it. They received the "Best New Artist" award at the "5th Asia Song Festival".
On October 30, 2008, Shinee won the "Best Style Icon Award". On the same day, they released a new version of their album called Amigo. It included three new songs. One of them was "A.Mi.Go (Amigo)". This name is a shorter way to say "Heart Aches When You Fall In Love With a Beauty".
On November 15, 2008, Shinee won "Best Male Rookie" at the MNET KM Music Festival. They also won the "YEPP Newcomer Album" award. This was at the 23rd Annual Golden Disk Awards.
2009–2011: More Music
SM Entertainment said Shinee would return with their second mini-album, Romeo, on May 21, 2009. The first song, "Juliette", came out on May 18. The album release was delayed a bit. This was because Onew had a small injury. Shinee finally performed their new songs on June 5, 2009. They won first place on KBS's Music Bank.
The group released their third mini-album, 2009: Year of Us, on October 19. This album showed off the group's singing skills. The main song, "Ring Ding Dong", was released on October 14. They performed it on KBS's Music Bank on October 16.
On July 19, 2010, the group released their second full album, Lucifer. It was very popular in South Korea. The album was nominated for an award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards. It was also one of the best-selling albums of 2010. On December 26, 2010, the band started their first concert tour, called Shinee World.
2016–Present: New Albums and a Sad Loss
On January 1, 2016, Shinee released their fourth Japanese album, D×D×D. This album quickly reached the top of the Japanese music charts. To share the album, they started their fourth Japanese tour. It ran from January 30 to May 16, 2016. They had 20 concerts in 9 cities. Later that year, Shinee released their fifth Korean album, "1 of 1". It was number one on the Korean charts. Their song, "Tell Me What to Do", was also very popular online.
On February 22, 2017, Shinee released their fifth Japanese album, Five. They then went on their fifth Japanese tour. They performed 25 concerts in 10 cities.
Shinee had planned a tour for February 2018. It was meant to celebrate Onew's return. But on December 18, Jonghyun, a member of the group, passed away in Seoul.

Other Activities
SHINee has done many other things besides music. They have appeared in TV ads. They also had their own reality shows. One show was called "Yun Ha Nam". It was about women older than them. They also represented the Korean Youth Federation. SHINee sang songs for TV drama soundtracks (OSTs). This includes "Stand By Me" for the famous Korean drama "Boys Over Flowers". They also appeared in the second season of the reality show "Hello Baby".
It was announced that Shinee would perform in Singapore. They performed with other groups like Jay Park and B1A4. This concert was on June 15, 2012.
