Kim Seok-jin (Hangul: 김석진; born December 4, 1992), known as Jin (Hangul: 진), is a South Korean singer and songwriter. He is a famous member of the K-pop boy band BTS.
Jin has released three solo songs with BTS. These include "Awake" (2016), "Epiphany" (2018), and "Moon" (2020). All of these songs were popular in South Korea. In 2019, Jin released his first song on his own, called "Tonight". He officially started his solo career in October 2022 with the song "The Astronaut".
Besides singing, Jin also hosted many music shows in South Korea from 2016 to 2018. In 2018, he and his bandmates received a special award. It was the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit from the President of South Korea. This award was for their amazing work in sharing Korean culture with the world.

Jin's Early Life and School
Kim Seok-jin was born on December 4, 1992. His hometown is Anyang, in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. He grew up with his mother, father, and older brother. In 2007, he went to Australia for a study camp to learn English.
Jin first wanted to be a journalist. But after watching an actor named Kim Nam-gil in a TV show, he decided to try acting instead. When he was in junior high, a K-pop company called SM Entertainment tried to recruit him. They saw him on the street, but he said no at the time. Jin then studied Film Studies at Konkuk University and graduated in 2017. Later, he went to graduate school to learn about other subjects.
Jin's Music Career
Becoming a Member of BTS
Jin was discovered by Big Hit Entertainment because of his good looks. He was studying acting and had no music experience. He first auditioned as an actor. But he later became a trainee to become an idol. On June 13, 2013, Jin officially joined BTS as one of their four singers.
As part of BTS, Jin has released three solo songs. These are "Awake", "Epiphany", and "Moon". "Awake" was released in 2016 on BTS' album Wings. Jin helped create this song. It was very popular in South Korea and the United States. In December, he shared a special Christmas version of "Awake" for free.
"Epiphany" came out on August 9, 2018. It was a preview for BTS' album Love Yourself: Answer. Billboard magazine called it a "building pop-rock melody". The song's message is about accepting and loving yourself. "Epiphany" was also a hit in South Korea and the US. In October 2018, Jin and his bandmates received the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit.
"Moon" was released in 2020 on BTS' album Map of the Soul: 7. A writer from Variety described it as a power pop song for the band's fans. "Moon" reached number one on a major South Korean music chart.
In July 2021, Jin and his bandmates were given a special role. They became Special Presidential Envoys for Future Generations and Culture. This meant they would help South Korea connect with the world.
Jin's Solo Projects
In 2016, Jin worked with his bandmate V on a song called "It's Definitely You". This song was for a TV show soundtrack. They were even nominated for an award for it. In June 2018, Jin sang on a different version of "So Far Away". This song was from bandmate Suga's mixtape. Jin has also covered other songs by different artists. He shared these covers on SoundCloud. He has also hosted Korean music award shows like Music Bank.
On June 4, 2019, Jin released his first solo song, "Tonight". It was an acoustic ballad. Jin helped write and compose the song. The lyrics were inspired by his pets. People really liked the song, praising Jin's singing and its calm feeling.
Jin released his second solo song, "Abyss", on December 3, 2020. This acoustic ballad was about his feelings of worry and tiredness. Jin wrote it with help from other artists. He shared on the BTS blog that these feelings helped him create the song.
In October 2021, Jin sang the main song for a TV drama called Jirisan. The song was called "Yours". On December 4, Jin released a fun, short song called "Super Tuna". It was a gift for his fans on his birthday. The song and its dance video quickly became very popular online. The video was number one on YouTube's World Popular Music Video chart for eight days. A dance challenge for "Super Tuna" also became huge on TikTok.
In August 2022, Jin worked with a game company called Nexon. He became a special game developer for MapleStory. This project was shown in a web series called Office Warrior Kim Seok Jin. On October 21, "Tonight", "Abyss", and "Super Tuna" became available on music streaming services. Jin then released his first official solo single, "The Astronaut", on October 28. He wrote this song with the famous British rock band Coldplay. Jin even performed the song live with Coldplay in Argentina. This song became his first solo song to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
After finishing his military service in June 2024, Jin hosted a fan event. He also carried the torch for South Korea at the Summer Olympics in Paris. He became the first global brand ambassador for a French jewelry brand, Fred. Later, he became a global ambassador for Gucci and Laneige. In October, an extended version of "Super Tuna" was released with a new music video. Big Hit Music then announced Jin's first solo album, Happy. It came out on November 15 with six songs. Two singles, "I'll Be There" and "Running Wild", supported the album.
Jin's Singing Style
Jin is a tenor singer and also plays the guitar. Experts have praised Jin's voice for being very steady and having a strong falsetto. They have called his voice a "silver voice". Journalists have noted that Jin's singing shows great control and emotion. His voice has been described as "tender, sorrowful, [and] free-spirited". Critics say his singing can express very deep feelings.
Jin's Personal Life
As of 2018, Jin lives in Hannam-dong, Seoul, South Korea. In the same year, he and his older brother opened a Japanese-style restaurant in Seoul. It is called Ossu Seiromushi.
Jin's Health
In March 2022, Jin hurt his left hand and needed surgery. Because of this, he could not perform fully at some BTS concerts. He had to sit and sing for most of the band's performance at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.
Jin's Military Service
On October 17, 2022, Big Hit announced that Jin would start his mandatory military service. He had been allowed to delay it until the end of 2022. On November 4, 2022, Jin officially asked to end his delay so he could join the military. He started his service on December 13 at an army base in Yeoncheon. After finishing his basic training, Jin became an assistant training instructor. He was officially discharged from the military on June 12, 2024. He was the first member of BTS to complete his military duties.
