A Look at History
North Gyeongsang Province has a long and interesting past. It was once home to ancient kingdoms and has seen many changes over centuries.
Early Kingdoms
Long ago, the area of Gyeongsang Province was part of territories called Jinhan and Byeonhan. These were early tribal states. Over time, Jinhan grew into the Gaya Confederacy, and Byeonhan became the powerful kingdom of Silla.
Silla and Goryeo Dynasties
Silla eventually conquered Gaya, bringing the entire Gyeongsang region under its control. When the Silla kingdom ended, the Goryeo Dynasty began. During the Goryeo period, the area was first called Dongnambuseosa. Later, around the time of King Hyeonjong, it started to be known as Gyeongsang Province.
Joseon Dynasty and Modern Era
During the Joseon Dynasty, Gyeongsang Province was divided into two parts: Left Gyeongsang and Right Gyeongsang. In 1895, these divisions were changed into four smaller districts. However, these districts were soon replaced. In 1896, the modern-day North Gyeongsang and South Gyeongsang provinces were officially created. In 1981, Daegu separated from the province to become its own metropolitan city.
