Gyeonggi Province (경기도) is a very important province in South Korea. It has the largest population of all provinces, with over 12 million people living there. Its capital city is Suwon.

The name Gyeonggi means 'surrounding the capital'. This is because the province completely surrounds Seoul, which is the capital city of South Korea. Gyeonggi Province is also right next to Incheon, a major city with a big international airport.

History of Gyeonggi Province

Gyeonggi Province has been important for a very long time. Its history goes back to ancient Korea.

Early Beginnings

The area became significant when King Onjo of Baekje built his capital, Wiryeseong, here. Baekje was one of the three ancient kingdoms of Korea.

Goryeo Dynasty

Later, during the Goryeo dynasty, the province became even more important. This happened after King Taejo made Gaegyeong (which is now Kaesong) the capital. Since the time of King Hyeonjong, this region has been known as Gyeonggi.

Population Growth

The number of people living in Gyeonggi Province has grown very quickly. This happened especially after South Korea started to modernize.

Why the Population Grew

The main reason for this growth is that Gyeonggi is so close to Seoul. Seoul is the center for business, culture, and many other things in South Korea. Because of this closeness, many people moved to Gyeonggi Province. Today, about 12,649,894 people live in Gyeonggi-do.

Cities and Counties

Gyeonggi Province is divided into different areas for local government. It has 28 cities, which are called Si. It also has 3 counties, which are called Gun.

Getting Around: Transport

Gyeonggi Province has a very good transportation system. This is because it is located right next to Seoul and Incheon.

Easy Travel

It's easy to travel to and from the capital city, Seoul, from Gyeonggi. Also, it's simple to fly to other countries from Incheon, where Korea's biggest international airport is located. A large part of Gyeonggi Province is connected by the Seoul Metropolitan Subway system, making travel convenient for many people.
