The Story of Nexon
Nexon started in Seoul, South Korea, on December 26, 1994. Their very first game was Nexus: The Kingdom of the Winds, released in 1996. People still play this game today! After that, Nexon made many other games like Dark Ages: Online Roleplaying and QuizQuiz.
How Nexon Got MapleStory
In April 2001, another game company called Wizet started in South Korea. Wizet created the popular game MapleStory, which first came out in Korea in April 2003. MapleStory quickly became very popular, with many players joining. Later that year, Wizet launched MapleStory in Japan. In 2004, Nexon bought Wizet. Since then, Nexon has continued to develop and publish MapleStory for players around the world.
How Nexon Got Dungeon & Fighter
Nexon also owns a company called Neople. Neople is the team behind Dungeon & Fighter, which is one of the most popular free online PC games, especially in China.
Nexon in the 2010s
Nexon became a public company on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on December 14, 2011. This means people could buy shares of the company. In 2013, Nexon America took legal action against a programmer who created cheats for their game Combat Arms. Nexon won the case and was awarded money.
In March 2016, Nexon bought Big Huge Games, a company that makes mobile games. In 2019, there were talks about Nexon's founder selling his shares, but the plan was later stopped. Also in 2019, The Lego Group bought Bricklink, a Lego fan community, from Nexon's parent company.
Nexon in the 2020s
In June 2020, Nexon announced they would invest a lot of money in other entertainment companies. By March 2021, they had invested in companies like Hasbro, Bandai Namco Holdings, Konami, and Sega Sammy Holdings. Nexon said they were not trying to take over these companies.
In February 2021, Nexon announced they were giving big pay raises to their game developers in Korea. In July 2021, Nexon started a new division called Nexon Film and Television in Los Angeles. In January 2022, Nexon bought a part of AGBO, a film production company owned by the Russo brothers. In February 2022, it was reported that the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund bought a small part of Nexon.
In May 2022, Nexon launched Mintrocket, a new part of the company focused on making games that are "pure fun." Their first game, Dave the Diver, was a huge success, selling one million copies very quickly. In late 2023, Nexon announced that Junghun Lee would become the new CEO in 2024. In October 2024, Nexon announced they were making The Kingdom of the Winds 2, a sequel to their very first game. Mintrocket became a fully owned part of Nexon in September 2024.
