Weezer is an American rock band that started in Los Angeles, California, in 1992. Since 2001, the band has included Rivers Cuomo (who sings and plays guitar and keyboards), Patrick Wilson (drums), Brian Bell (guitar, keyboards, and backup vocals), and Scott Shriner (bass, keyboards, and backup vocals). Weezer has sold over 35 million albums around the world.
After signing with Geffen Records in 1993, Weezer released their first album in May 1994. It was called the "Blue Album". Songs like "Undone – The Sweater Song", "Buddy Holly", and "Say It Ain't So" became very popular. The "Blue Album" sold millions of copies. Weezer's second album, Pinkerton (1996), had a different, tougher sound. It wasn't popular at first but later became a favorite among fans. Both the "Blue Album" and Pinkerton are now seen as important albums from the 1990s. After touring for Pinkerton, the band's first bassist, Matt Sharp, left. Weezer then took a break.
In 2001, Weezer came back with the "Green Album". Mikey Welsh joined as the new bassist. This album had a more pop sound. Songs like "Hash Pipe" and "Island in the Sun" helped it become a big success. After the "Green Album" tour, Welsh left due to health reasons. Scott Shriner then became the bassist. Weezer's fourth album, Maladroit (2002), had a hard rock sound. Their album Make Believe (2005) included the hit song "Beverly Hills". This song was their first to reach the top of the US Modern Rock Tracks chart.
In 2008, Weezer released the "Red Album". Its first song, "Pork and Beans", also topped the Modern Rock Tracks chart. The music video for "Pork and Beans" won a Grammy Award. Albums like Raditude (2009) and Hurley (2010) had a more modern pop sound. Everything Will Be Alright in the End (2014) and the "White Album" (2016) brought back their 1990s rock style. Pacific Daydream (2017) had a more mainstream pop sound. In 2019, Weezer released a surprise album of cover songs, the "Teal Album". This was followed by the "Black Album". In 2021, they released OK Human, which featured an orchestral pop sound. Then came the hard rock-inspired Van Weezer. In 2022, Weezer released SZNZ, a series of four EPs based on the seasons.

The Story of Weezer
How Weezer Started (1989–1994)
Rivers Cuomo, the lead singer and guitarist, moved to Los Angeles in 1989. He was with his high school band, Avant Garde. After that band broke up, Cuomo met drummer Patrick Wilson. Cuomo started listening to alternative rock bands like Nirvana and the Pixies. He and Wilson formed a band called Fuzz. Later, they formed Sixty Wrong Sausages, but it also broke up. Cuomo then recorded many demo songs. Matt Sharp liked these songs and became the band's bassist.
Cuomo, Wilson, Sharp, and Jason Cropper formed Weezer on February 14, 1992. Their first show was on March 19, 1992. They opened for Keanu Reeves' band Dogstar. The band's name "Weezer" came from a nickname Cuomo's father gave him. In November 1992, Weezer recorded a demo called The Kitchen Tape. This demo included an early version of "Say It Ain't So". Todd Sullivan from Geffen Records heard the demo and signed Weezer in June 1993.
The "Blue Album" and Pinkerton (1994–1997)
Weezer recorded their first album with producer Ric Ocasek in New York City. Jason Cropper was asked to leave during recording. Brian Bell then joined as the new guitarist. Weezer's first album, the "Blue Album", came out in May 1994. It mixed alternative rock with catchy pop songs.
Weezer's first single, "Undone – The Sweater Song", had a music video directed by Spike Jonze. It showed the band performing with dogs on the set. The video quickly became popular on MTV. Their second video, "Buddy Holly", was also directed by Jonze. It showed the band playing inside clips from the TV show Happy Days. This video was played a lot on MTV and won several awards. "Buddy Holly" is also on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Best Songs Of All Time. A third song, "Say It Ain't So", was also released and received praise.
The "Blue Album" was a big success. In 2020, Rolling Stone ranked it among the 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time. It has sold millions of copies in the United States and Canada.
In 1994, Weezer took a break. Rivers Cuomo started writing songs for their next album. He thought about making a space-themed rock opera. This idea was called Songs from the Black Hole. Cuomo wanted to express his feelings about being successful. Later, Cuomo went to Harvard University. His songwriting became more serious, and he stopped working on Songs from the Black Hole. While at Harvard, Cuomo felt lonely and had surgery on his leg. These experiences shaped the songs for the next album. Other band members worked on their own projects during this time.
Weezer's second album, Pinkerton, was released on September 24, 1996. It was named after a character from an opera called Madama Butterfly. Cuomo felt this character represented parts of himself he was trying to understand. The album had three singles: "El Scorcho", "The Good Life", and "Pink Triangle".
Pinkerton had a darker sound. It did not sell as well as the "Blue Album" at first. It also received mixed reviews. However, over time, many fans grew to love the album. It is now considered one of Weezer's best works. In 2004, Rolling Stone gave the album a perfect rating. Pinkerton is also known for influencing many emo bands in the 2000s.
In July 1997, three sisters who ran Weezer's fan club passed away in a car accident. Weezer canceled a show to attend their funeral. The band and other groups held a benefit concert for their family. An album called Hear You Me! A Tribute to Mykel and Carli was made in their memory.
Weezer's Break and Return (1997–2002)
Weezer finished the Pinkerton tour in mid-1997 and took a break. Patrick Wilson worked on his band, the Special Goodness. Brian Bell worked on his band, Space Twins. In 1998, Matt Sharp left Weezer because of disagreements. This left Cuomo and Wilson as the only original members.
Cuomo went back to Harvard but took time off to write songs. He formed a new band with different musicians. Wilson later joined another one of Cuomo's projects called Homie. They released one song for a movie.
In February 1998, Cuomo, Bell, and Wilson started working on a new Weezer album. They hired Mikey Welsh, who had played with Cuomo before, as their new bassist. They rehearsed and recorded demos. However, creative disagreements caused problems. Wilson left for a while. In November 1998, the band played two shows under the name Goat Punishment. They played only cover songs by Nirvana and Oasis. Cuomo then went through a difficult period, but he kept writing many songs.
The "Green Album" and Maladroit
Weezer got back together in April 2000 to play at the Fuji Rock Festival. This helped them start making new music again. They played small, unannounced shows as Goat Punishment. In June 2000, they joined the American Warped Tour.
The band then went into the studio to make their third album, the "Green Album". Rivers Cuomo wrote less personal songs for this album. They worked with producer Ric Ocasek again. After the album came out, Weezer went on another tour. The album had popular songs like "Hash Pipe" and "Island in the Sun". "Hash Pipe" reached number 2 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. "Island In the Sun" became a big radio hit. The "Green Album" debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart and has sold over a million copies.
After facing health challenges and the stress of touring, Welsh left Weezer in 2001. He was replaced by Scott Shriner.
Weezer tried a new way to record their fourth album. They let fans download early versions of new songs from their website. Fans could give feedback. However, the band later felt this process didn't work well. Cuomo let the band's A&R representative choose the songs for the album.
The band's fourth album, Maladroit, was released on May 14, 2002. It came out only a year after the "Green Album". Maladroit had a tougher, more guitar-heavy sound. It received good reviews, but its sales were not as strong. Two songs from the album were released as singles. In 2004, Weezer released their first DVD, Video Capture Device. It showed the band's history with home videos, music videos, and concert clips.
The Make Believe Album (2003–2006)
Before working on new music, Rivers Cuomo started practicing meditation. This greatly influenced his songwriting. He decided to write more personal songs again. From 2003 to 2004, Weezer recorded many songs for a new album.
This album, called Make Believe, was released on May 10, 2005. It debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Critics had mixed feelings about Make Believe.
The album's first song, "Beverly Hills", became a huge hit. It was Weezer's first song to reach number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart. It also reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. "Beverly Hills" was nominated for a Grammy Award. In early 2006, Make Believe sold over a million copies. "Beverly Hills" was also one of the most popular song downloads on iTunes in 2005. The third single, "Perfect Situation", also reached number 1 on the U.S. Billboard Modern Rock chart.
The "Red Album" (2006–2008)
After the success of Make Believe, the band took a break. Rivers Cuomo returned to Harvard University and graduated in 2006. He also got married in June 2006. Other band members worked on their own projects. Patrick Wilson and Brian Bell appeared in the 2006 film Factory Girl.
The "Red Album" was released in June 2008. It was produced by Rick Rubin and Jacknife Lee. The album was described as "experimental." Cuomo said it was Weezer's "boldest" album. It included longer songs and different instruments like synthesizers. The album debuted at number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Its first single, "Pork and Beans", was number 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks charts for 11 weeks. Its music video won a Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. The second single, "Troublemaker", reached number 2 on the chart.
In May 2008, Weezer announced the "Hootenanny Tour". Fans were invited to bring their own instruments and play along with the band. They could bring oboes, keyboards, drums, or violins. The band performed five shows in Japan. They then went on the "Troublemaker" tour in North America. At each show, fans were invited on stage to play "Island in the Sun" and "Beverly Hills" with the band.
Raditude and Hurley (2009–2013)
Weezer toured with Blink-182 in 2009. Drummer Josh Freese joined Weezer temporarily for the tour. Patrick Wilson played guitar instead of drums. Wilson said Cuomo wanted to be more active on stage.
On August 18, 2009, Weezer released the first single for their next album, "If You're Wondering If I Want You To". The album was called Raditude, a name suggested by actor Rainn Wilson. The album cover showed a jumping dog. Raditude was released on November 3, 2009. It debuted as the seventh best-selling album of the week. In December 2009, Rivers Cuomo was injured when his tour bus crashed. Weezer canceled their remaining tour dates but resumed touring in January 2010.
In December 2009, the band left Geffen Records. They later signed with the independent label Epitaph. Weezer played at several music festivals in 2010.
The band's eighth album, Hurley, was released in September 2010. It was named after the character Hugo "Hurley" Reyes from the TV show Lost. The actor who played Hurley, Jorge Garcia, was featured on the album cover. The first single, "Memories", was part of the soundtrack for the 2010 film Jackass 3D. Weezer used YouTube to promote the album. They worked with 15 online video creators.
In November 2010, Weezer released Death to False Metal. This album had new versions of old, unreleased songs. They also released a deluxe version of Pinkerton. Cuomo released a third album of his solo demos, Alone III: The Pinkerton Years, in December 2011. The band covered "I'm a Believer" for the 2010 film Shrek Forever After. They also covered "You Might Think" by the Cars for the 2011 Pixar film Cars 2.
Weezer started working on their ninth album in September 2010. On October 8, 2011, former Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh passed away. Weezer dedicated their concert the next day to him.
In January 2012, the band hosted a four-day music cruise called the Weezer Cruise. In early 2013, the band brought its Memories Tour to Australia. They played their first two albums completely at several venues. They also toured Japan, Canada, and the United States.
Everything Will Be Alright in the End and the "White Album" (2013–2016)
In January 2014, Weezer began recording with producer Ric Ocasek again. He had produced the "Blue Album" and the "Green Album". On June 12, 2014, the album title was announced as Everything Will Be Alright in the End. It was released on October 7, 2014. The album received good reviews, becoming their best-reviewed album since Pinkerton. The first single, "Back to the Shack", reached number 5 on the Alternative Airplay chart.
The album had themes about relationships with women, fans, and father figures. Rivers Cuomo used his own experiences to write the songs.
On October 26, 2015, the band released a new song, "Thank God for Girls". The next week, they released "Do You Wanna Get High?". On January 14, 2016, Weezer released "King of the World". They also announced the "White Album". This album also received good reviews. Cuomo used dating apps like Tinder to find inspiration for new songs. He also tried new songwriting methods.
The "White Album" was released on April 1, 2016. It reached number 4 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album explored themes of gender and modern dating. It was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. Weezer toured with Panic! at the Disco in 2016. They later signed with Atlantic Records.
Pacific Daydream (2017–2018)
After the "White Album", Cuomo talked about plans for their next album, possibly called the "Black Album". He said it would be about "more mature topics" and be "less summer day and more winter night". However, Weezer delayed recording. Cuomo felt his new songs sounded more like "reveries from a beach at the end of the world."
To write the album, Cuomo used many musical and lyrical ideas he had saved. He organized them in a spreadsheet to help him when he felt stuck.
On March 16, 2017, Weezer released a new song, "Feels Like Summer". This song became their biggest hit on Alternative radio in ten years. On August 16, Weezer announced Pacific Daydream, which was released on October 27. Other songs like "Mexican Fender", "Beach Boys", and "Weekend Woman" were also released. "Happy Hour" reached number 9 on the Alternative Airplay chart. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album.
The "Teal Album" and the "Black Album" (2018–2019)
After a fan kept asking on Twitter, Weezer released a cover of Toto's song "Africa" on May 29, 2018. Before that, they released a cover of "Rosanna" as a joke. "Africa" became number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in August 2018. This was their first number-one single since "Pork and Beans" in 2008. Toto then responded by covering Weezer's song "Hash Pipe". The success of "Africa" led Weezer to record an album of covers, the "Teal Album". It was a surprise release on January 24, 2019. The album was very popular and reached number 4 on the Billboard 200.
On September 20, 2018, Weezer released "California Snow" for the 2018 film Spell. This song was also on the "Black Album". On October 11, 2018, Weezer released "Can't Knock the Hustle". This was the first song from their upcoming album. On November 21, they announced the "Black Album". It was produced by Dave Sitek and released on March 1, 2019. They also announced a tour with the Pixies.
OK Human and Van Weezer (2019–2021)
In January 2019, Rivers Cuomo announced that Weezer had already recorded songs for an album after the "Black Album". This album, produced by Jake Sinclair, would feature piano and strings. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Weezer recorded it in a more natural style, without a metronome. Cuomo also said he was working on an album called Van Weezer. This album would bring back their heavier rock sound. He noticed that crowds loved guitar solos at Weezer shows.
On September 10, 2019, the band announced the Hella Mega Tour. They would headline with Green Day and Fall Out Boy. The Interrupters opened the shows. They also released "The End of the Game", the first song from Van Weezer. The song reached number 2 on the Alternative Airplay chart. Cuomo said the band would return "back to big guitars".
The band recorded a version of "Lost in the Woods" for the 2019 film Frozen II. The music video featured the band and actress Kristen Bell. On May 6, 2020, Weezer released the song "Hero". It was a tribute to essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. They also announced that Van Weezer would be delayed. The song reached number 1 on the Alternative Airplay chart. On May 10, Weezer appeared on The Simpsons. A part of their song "Blue Dream" was played. On August 14, 2020, the band announced Van Weezer would be released in May 2021. The third single, "Beginning of the End", was released for the 2020 film Bill & Ted Face the Music. In October 2020, the album was dedicated to Eddie Van Halen and Ric Ocasek, who had passed away.
On January 18, 2021, the band announced their fourteenth album, OK Human. It was released on January 29. The first song, "All My Favorite Songs", was released as a single. It reached number 1 on the Alternative Airplay chart. It was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.
OK Human was planned to be released after Van Weezer. However, Van Weezer was delayed due to the pandemic. So, the band focused on finishing OK Human first. Work on OK Human began in 2017. The band wanted to combine rock music with an orchestra. They hired a 38-piece orchestra. They recorded the album using old-fashioned analog equipment. The album was inspired by the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds (1966).
The fourth single, "I Need Some of That", was released on April 21, 2021. Van Weezer was released on May 7, 2021. The album was compared to their earlier album Maladroit. It was inspired by 1970s and 1980s hard rock and heavy metal bands. These included Kiss, Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Van Halen. Van Halen inspired the album's title.

Weezer's Musical Style and Influences
The Sound of Weezer
Weezer's music has been called many things, like alternative rock, power pop, pop rock, and pop-punk. Some people also call it geek rock or emo. It's hard to put Weezer into just one category because they try different styles. They have made albums with pop covers, orchestral pop, and arena rock.
The members of Weezer have said they are influenced by bands like Kiss, Nirvana, the Pixies, the Cars, and Cheap Trick. Rivers Cuomo said the Beach Boys were a big influence, especially their album Pet Sounds. Brian Bell described Weezer's sound as "Beach Boys with Marshall stacks" (meaning loud guitars). Operas and musicals also influenced some of their albums. For Van Weezer, the band was inspired by 1970s and 1980s hard rock and heavy metal music bands. These included Kiss, Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Van Halen.
Instruments and Song Meanings
Weezer's music often features loud guitars and catchy melodies. They are known for their "nerdy" image. Their style mixes the strong pop sound of bands like Cheap Trick with the sharp guitar sounds of the Pixies. They also add a bit of 70s rock. Weezer's early music had a lot of energy from punk and the guitar power of grunge.
The band's second album, Pinkerton, had a darker and more raw sound. The "Green Album" went back to a tighter pop sound. Maladroit had a tougher sound with lots of guitar riffs and solos. Make Believe (2005) returned to more emotional songwriting. On the "Red Album", the band started using longer song structures.
Weezer's songs often mix serious and funny ideas. The lyrics on Pinkerton were very personal. The band members, especially Rivers Cuomo, were not typical rock stars. They were kids who loved playing music in their garage. This gave their music a unique sense of humor and a charming awkwardness.
Weezer's Impact and Influence
Weezer has a strong fan base that has followed them for many years. They are known as "alt-rock icons of the '90s." They are one of the most popular groups to come out after the grunge era. Their album Pinkerton is seen as a very important album for emo music. It influenced many emo bands, even though Weezer isn't strictly an emo band.
Many artists have said Weezer influenced them. These include Paramore, Fun., Olivia Rodrigo, Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, Blink-182, Taylor Swift, and Charli XCX.
Solo Work and Other Projects
The members of Weezer have also worked on their own music. Patrick Wilson started the Special Goodness in 1996. He sings and plays guitar and bass for this project. Brian Bell started the Space Twins in 1994. He later started a new band called the Relationship in 2006.
Former bassist Matt Sharp started the Rentals in 1994. He left Weezer in 1998 to focus on the Rentals. Sharp has also released music under his own name. Mikey Welsh toured with other artists. Scott Shriner played bass for Anthony Green's album Avalon (2008).
Rivers Cuomo has released several albums of his own demo songs. These are called Alone: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo (2007), Alone II: The Home Recordings of Rivers Cuomo (2008), and Alone III: The Pinkerton Years (2011). In 2013, Cuomo and Scott Murphy released a Japanese-language album called Scott & Rivers. In November 2020, Cuomo released thousands of his unreleased songs and demos online.
