The Grammy Award for Best Rock Song is a special honor given out at the Grammy Awards. These awards started in 1958. They celebrate great songs in the rock music style. The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the United States gives out these awards every year. They want to celebrate amazing artistic work and excellent recordings. They don't care about how many copies a song sells.
This award is specifically for the people who write the songs, called songwriters. It was first given in 1992 to the English musician Sting. To win, a song must be new, with both music and words. It also needs to have become popular during the time it was eligible. Songs that use parts of other songs (called samples or interpolations) are usually not allowed to win.
If a song does use samples, the original songwriter can still get a special certificate. This award always goes to the person or people who wrote the song.
Top Winners and Nominees
Bruce Springsteen, Dave Grohl, and Pat Smear have won this award four times each. That's the most wins for any songwriter! Bruce Springsteen also has the most nominations, with nine.
Other artists have won multiple times too. The band Foo Fighters (with Taylor Hawkins, Nate Mendel, and Chris Shiflett) has won three times. Alanis Morissette, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and U2 have each won twice.
Most of the winning songs have been by American artists. But musicians from Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom have also won. Sometimes, an artist or group has been nominated for two different songs in the same year. This happened with Aerosmith in 1994 and Melissa Etheridge in 1995. Jakob Dylan and U2 also had two nominations in one year. Chad Smith was nominated twice in 2023 for different bands. The band Coldplay has been nominated four times but hasn't won yet.
