Early Life and Music Journey
Marcus Mumford was born on January 31, 1987, in Yorba Linda, California. His parents, John and Eleanor Mumford, were from England. Because of his parents, Marcus has citizenship in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
When Marcus was six months old, his family moved back to the UK. He grew up in Wimbledon Chase, southwest London. He went to King's College School in Wimbledon, London, where he met Ben Lovett, who would later become a bandmate. After his first year at the University of Edinburgh, Marcus returned to London to focus on music. He then helped create Mumford & Sons' first album, Sigh No More.
Starting the Band
Marcus began his music career playing drums for singer Laura Marling on tour. The other future members of Mumford & Sons also toured with her. This experience helped them learn about playing live shows and writing songs. In 2007, they decided to form their own band, Mumford & Sons.
In December 2012, Forbes magazine included Marcus Mumford in their "30 Under 30" list of music stars. This list celebrates young people who are doing amazing things. Forbes said that the people on the list, like Marcus, were "entrepreneurial, creative and intellectual best of their generation."
