During her last year of school, screenwriter Julian Fellowes visited her school. Carey asked him for advice about acting. He tried to tell her not to pursue it, but she was determined. She later sent him a letter explaining how serious she was. Fellowes's wife then invited Carey to a dinner where she met a casting assistant. This led to her audition for Pride & Prejudice.
