Early Life and Music Beginnings
Tyler Robert Joseph was born on December 1, 1988, in Columbus, Ohio. His parents are Christopher and Kelly Joseph. He has two younger brothers and a younger sister. His mother was a math teacher and later a basketball coach. His father was a basketball coach and a school principal.
Tyler was homeschooled when he was young. He first discovered music through the Christian rap rock group DC Talk. He also really liked the indie rock band The Killers. Tyler says that actor Jim Carrey was also a big influence on him.
He played basketball from a young age and was a point guard for Worthington Christian High School. In 2008, his team finished second in a state tournament. Nick Thomas, who later played bass for Twenty One Pilots, was on the same team. They even performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" together at one of their games.
In 2007, Tyler started uploading funny videos and skits to his YouTube channel called "slushieguys." The channel still has many subscribers, even though he stopped uploading new videos in 2013.
After seeing a songwriter perform, Tyler decided to focus on music instead of playing basketball in college, even though he had a scholarship offer. He started making music after finding an old keyboard that his mother had given him for Christmas. He would try to play songs he heard on the radio. From 2007 to 2008, Tyler recorded his own music project called No Phun Intended in his basement. Nick Thomas played guitar on some of these songs.
When Twenty One Pilots first started, Tyler remembers his mother often stood outside Ohio State University giving away tickets to his shows. She would tell people, "Come see my son play music!"
Music Career with Twenty One Pilots
Forming Twenty One Pilots
Twenty One Pilots was formed in 2009 in Columbus, Ohio. The first members were Tyler Joseph, bassist Nick Thomas, and drummer Chris Salih. Nick and Chris left the band in 2011.
On December 29, 2009, the band released their first album, Twenty One Pilots. They started touring around Ohio. In 2011, they released their second album, Regional at Best. By this time, the band was just Tyler Joseph and new drummer Josh Dun.
Rising to Fame
Twenty One Pilots' third album, Vessel, came out on January 8, 2013. They went on a tour called the "Quiet Is Violent World Tour" to support the album.
On March 17, 2015, the band announced their fourth album, Blurryface. Fans were so excited that their website crashed when they tried to pre-order it! The album was released on May 17, 2015. Tyler and Josh went on two big international tours in 2015 and 2016: the Blurryface Tour and the Emotional Roadshow World Tour. At the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, they won an award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Recent Albums and Tours
On July 11, 2018, the band announced their fifth album, Trench, which was released on October 5, 2018. They also started a world tour called The Bandito Tour. Music videos for songs like "Nico and the Niners" were released, telling a story about Tyler Joseph's fictional city called "Dema." A short part of the song "My Blood" was heard in a commercial. The full song was accidentally leaked online, so the band released it officially soon after. A music video for "My Blood" was released on the same day as the album.
On April 9, 2020, the band released a new song called "Level of Concern". The song talks about feeling worried during the COVID-19 pandemic. The music video was filmed in Tyler and Josh's homes while they were in lockdown. Tyler gave some of the money from the song to Crew Nation, a charity that helps people who work on live music shows.
On December 8, 2020, Twenty One Pilots released a Christmas song called "Christmas Saves the Year" during a Twitch live stream. Tyler said he was inspired to write it by seeing Christmas through his young daughter's eyes.
The band's sixth album, Scaled and Icy, was released on May 21, 2021.
Their seventh album, Clancy, came out on May 24, 2024. The first song from the album, "Overcompensate", was released earlier. Tyler announced that every song on the Clancy album would have its own music video.
Other Projects and Collaborations
Tyler Joseph has also worked on music projects outside of Twenty One Pilots.
In 2010, he was featured on a song called "Live" by a hip hop artist named Jocef, who was a friend from college. Tyler also helped write this song. Jocef later appeared on Twenty One Pilots' song "Be Concerned" from their 2011 album Regional at Best.
In 2011, Tyler acted in a three-episode mockumentary (a fake documentary) called "The (moderately inspiring tale of the) Longboard Rodeo Tango" for Five14 Church. He was an intern at the church at the time.
In 2012, Tyler was in a video about being safe online called "What's Your Story?" The video was made by Mark C. Eshleman, who often works with Twenty One Pilots.
On Christmas Eve in 2013, Tyler sang "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" at a "Christmas with the Stars" event at Five14 Church. He also performed a magic trick with the host of the show.
Tyler also helped with some songs on a worship album called Clear by the band New Albany Music, which is part of Five14 Church. He is featured on four songs from that album. Another song called "Dead Come Alive" was also recorded with them.
In December 2014, Tyler sang backup vocals on the song "Sickly Sweet Holidays" by Dallon Weekes, who was a bassist for Panic! at the Disco at the time.
Tyler helped produce parts of singer Shania Twain's album Queen of Me and helped write the song "The Hardest Stone." In 2023, Jon Foreman of the band Switchfoot announced that Tyler would be covering their song "Twenty-Four." Tyler has said that Switchfoot's album The Beautiful Letdown is one of his "favorite albums of all time."
Personal Life
Tyler Joseph has spoken about his Christian faith. He believes in God and identifies as a Christian.
He supports the Black Lives Matter movement and is an ally of the LGBT+ community. He is also against using AI to create artwork.
Tyler has a three-part tattoo that means something important that "saved his life." He prefers not to share the meaning online but is willing to tell people in person if they ask him. Both Tyler and Josh Dun have an "X" tattoo. They got these tattoos on stage in 2013 to show their dedication to their fans in their hometown. Tyler's is on his right arm, and Josh's is behind his right ear. Tyler also has the name "Josh" tattooed on his right leg, which Josh Dun tattooed on him during a show in 2015. Tyler is a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes sports teams.
In January 2015, Tyler was an attendant at his former bandmate Chris Salih's wedding.
Tyler married Jenna Black on March 28, 2015. They have three children together: two daughters and a son.
