Joshua William Dun (born June 18, 1988) is an American musician. He is best known as the drummer for the popular music duo Twenty One Pilots. He plays alongside Tyler Joseph. Josh Dun has also worked with other artists. His band has been nominated for six Grammy Awards, and he has won one.

Early Life and Learning Music

Joshua William Dun was born in Columbus, Ohio, on June 18, 1988. His parents are Laura Lee Dun and William Earl "Bill" Dun. He has two sisters and a brother.

When he was younger, Josh first took trumpet lessons at school. But then he became very interested in drums. He taught himself how to play the drums. One way he learned was by listening to records he bought and then trying to copy the drum beats on an electronic drum kit.

Josh worked at a music store called Guitar Center for three years. There, he met Chris Salih, who used to be the drummer for Twenty One Pilots. Chris later introduced Josh to Tyler Joseph, who would become his bandmate.

Music Career

Joining House of Heroes

In March 2010, Josh Dun joined a band called House of Heroes. He filled in for their drummer, Colin Rigsby, who was taking a break. Josh even appeared in the music video for their song "God Save the Foolish Kings." He toured with House of Heroes until October 2010.

After leaving his job at Guitar Center, Josh planned to move to Nashville, Tennessee. He wanted to pursue a career as a drummer. However, Chris Salih, the drummer for Twenty One Pilots at the time, offered Josh his spot in the band.

Starting with Twenty One Pilots

Josh played a show with Tyler Joseph after Chris Salih and bassist Nick Thomas left Twenty One Pilots. They only played one song before police stopped the show! Soon after, Josh became the full-time drummer for the band. He joined as they were finishing their second album, Regional at Best. This album was released on July 8, 2011. Even though Josh didn't play on this album, he is thanked in the album notes.

Success with Twenty One Pilots

In April 2012, Twenty One Pilots signed with a record label called Fueled by Ramen. This label is part of Atlantic Records.

The band's third album, Vessel, came out on January 8, 2013. It reached number 21 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Their fourth album, Blurryface, was released on May 17, 2015. This album helped the band become very famous with their hit song "Stressed Out." The music video for "Stressed Out" was filmed at Josh Dun's childhood home. It has been watched over 2.9 billion times on YouTube!

The band's fifth album, Trench, was released on October 5, 2018.

During the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, the duo released a new song called "Level of Concern" on April 9, 2020. The music video was filmed in Tyler and Josh's homes. On December 8, 2020, Twenty One Pilots released a Christmas song, "Christmas Saves the Year." Their sixth album, Scaled and Icy, came out on May 21, 2021.

The duo's seventh album, Clancy, was released on May 24, 2024. Josh Dun even directed the music video for the album's third song, "Backslide." This was his first time directing a music video.

Other Projects

In 2017, Josh Dun worked with Hayley Williams from the band Paramore. They helped promote her hair dye line called "Good Dye Young."

Music Influences

When Josh was 13, he became interested in punk music. He wanted to find "the fastest punk rock he could find." He mostly listened to punk rock while growing up. He liked ...And Out Come the Wolves by Rancid because it mixed different music styles. Some of his first music purchases were an album by NOFX and Human Clay by Creed. He said "Higher" was one of his favorite songs.

Later, he started listening to pop punk bands like Sum 41 and Blink-182. When he was learning drums, Josh would play along to Metallica songs. However, his parents had strict rules about what music he could listen to. He once said, "I'd hide albums like Green Day's Dookie underneath my bed. Sometimes they'd find them and get real mad." They would then make him listen to Christian alternative bands like Relient K. Later, Josh started listening to slower alternative rock bands like Brand New.

From a young age, Josh has always wanted to "blend" different music styles and create diverse music.

Personal Life

Josh Dun and his bandmate Tyler Joseph both have an "X" tattoo. This tattoo shows their dedication to their fans in their hometown of Columbus, Ohio. They got these tattoos on stage during a show in Columbus on April 26, 2013. Tyler's tattoo is on his right arm, and Josh's is on his neck behind his right ear. Josh also has the name "Tyler" tattooed above his left knee. He got this tattoo from Tyler Joseph on stage during a show in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on October 30, 2015. Both Josh and Tyler are big fans of the Ohio State Buckeyes sports teams.

Josh Dun started dating actress and singer Debby Ryan in May 2013. They got married in Austin, Texas, on December 31, 2019. Josh and Debby are big fans of the Fast & Furious movies. They even had a small appearance in the movie Fast X.

Josh and Debby currently live in Columbus, Ohio. In March 2023, Architectural Digest magazine released a video about their home. Josh is also a big boxing fan and has a boxing ring in his basement. In May 2023, a music store called Sweetwater filmed a video about how Josh's home music studio was built.
