The Story of Fueled by Ramen
The idea for Fueled by Ramen came from John Janick when he was in high school. Later, at the University of Florida, he teamed up with Vinnie Fiorello. Vinnie was the drummer and songwriter for the band Less Than Jake. They named the label "Fueled by Ramen" because they spent most of their money on making music. This meant they could only afford cheap instant ramen noodles to eat!
Early Success and Growth
Fueled by Ramen had its first big success in 1998. This was with an album called an "EP" (which is like a mini-album) from the band Jimmy Eat World. This success helped the label buy its first office in Tampa.
The label soon partnered with a company called ADA. This partnership helped Fueled by Ramen grow. John Janick said that they could act like a small, quick independent label. But they also had the big resources of a major music company.
New Bands and Big Hits
In 2004, Pete Wentz from Fall Out Boy introduced Fueled by Ramen to a band called The Academy Is.... This band released their first album, Almost Here, in 2005.
Soon after, John Janick and Pete Wentz created another label called Decaydance Records. They released music from many different kinds of bands. These included Gym Class Heroes and the Hush Sound.
In September 2005, Decaydance and Fueled by Ramen released A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. This was the first album from Panic! at the Disco. It became super popular, selling millions of copies.
Changes and More Success
In 2006, Vinnie Fiorello left the label. He felt that the label was going in a different direction. He also felt less excited about the music they were signing.
In 2007, Fueled by Ramen opened an office in New York City. That same year, Paramore's album Riot! became very popular. It sold many copies and later reached "platinum status." This means it sold over one million copies.
Panic! at the Disco's second album, Pretty. Odd., also did very well. It sold over 139,000 copies in its first week. Later, in 2016, Panic! at the Disco's album Death of a Bachelor was a huge hit. It sold 196,000 copies in its first week. This made it the fastest-selling album in the label's history at that time.
Twenty One Pilots Joins the Family
In 2012, Fueled by Ramen signed the musical duo Twenty One Pilots. They released their first album with the label, Vessel, in 2013. This album included popular songs like "Holding on to You" and "Car Radio".
In 2015, Twenty One Pilots released their breakthrough album, Blurryface. This album had huge hits like "Stressed Out" and "Ride". Blurryface reached number one on the US Billboard charts. It has sold over 6 million copies in the U.S. alone. "Stressed Out" is the most-watched music video on Fueled by Ramen's YouTube channel. It has over 3 billion views!
New Homes for the Label
In June 2018, Fueled by Ramen became part of a new group called Elektra Music Group. This group officially started on October 1, 2018. Then, in June 2022, Elektra Music Group (and Fueled by Ramen with it) joined a new, bigger group called 300 Elektra Entertainment.
Most recently, in October 2024, 300 Elektra Entertainment and Fueled by Ramen became part of the Atlantic Music Group. Fueled by Ramen still keeps its own name on its music releases.
