"You Might Think" is a popular song by the American rock band the Cars. It came out in 1984 on their fifth album, Heartbeat City. The band's lead singer, Ric Ocasek, wrote the song and also sang the main vocals.

The song was released on March 13, 1984. It quickly became a big hit, reaching number seven in the United States and number eight in Canada. It was also the first song by The Cars to hit number one on the US Mainstream Rock chart. The song was even used in the 2016 TV show BrainDead.

Creating the "You Might Think" Music Video

The music video for "You Might Think" was very special for its time. It was one of the first videos to use computer graphics in a big way. This made it look really new and exciting.

What Happens in the Video

The video shows Ric Ocasek and a model named Susan Gallagher. Ocasek appears in many surprising and funny ways. He pops up in her bathroom mirror and even inside a giant periscope in her bathtub! He also turns into a fly, King Kong on top of the Empire State Building, and even a Robot Monster.

The other band members also show up throughout the video. For example, keyboardist Greg Hawkes plays a dentist in one funny scene. Guitarist Elliot Easton, bassist Benjamin Orr, and drummer David Robinson fly planes around Ocasek when he is King Kong.

Awards for the Video

The "You Might Think" music video was a huge success. It won the very first MTV Video Music Award for Video of the Year! This was a really big deal. It was also nominated for five more MTV awards, including:

  • Best Special Effects
  • Best Art Direction
  • Viewer's Choice
  • Best Concept Video
  • Most Experimental Video

The video also won many other awards from Billboard magazine and the Videotape Production Association. It was praised for being innovative and having great special effects.

How the Video Was Made

Robin Sloane from Elektra Records helped guide the video's creation. She worked with director Jeff Stein and a company called Charlex. Charlex was known for their creative TV commercials. They used a new tool called the Quantel Paintbox, which was one of the first ways artists could draw directly on a video screen.

The video was directed by Jeff Stein, along with Charlex founders Alex Weil and Charlie Levi. Making the video cost about $80,000. This was almost three times more than what most music videos cost back then!
