Early Life and Early Career
Eva Gabor was born in Budapest, Hungary. She was the youngest of three daughters. Her father was Vilmos Gábor, a soldier, and her mother was Jolie Gabor, a jeweler. Eva was the first of her sisters to move to the United States. She came shortly after her first marriage in 1937, when she was 18 years old.
Her first movie role in the U.S. was in 1941 in a film called Forced Landing. In the 1950s, she appeared in several movies. These included The Last Time I Saw Paris with Elizabeth Taylor. She also appeared in Artists and Models with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. In 1953, Eva had her own TV talk show, The Eva Gabor Show. It ran for one season. She continued to appear in TV shows and movies throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. Some of her other films were My Man Godfrey, Gigi, and It Started with a Kiss.
Starring in Green Acres
In 1965, Eva Gabor got her most famous role as Lisa Douglas. In the show, her husband, Oliver Wendell Douglas (Eddie Albert), decides to leave city life. He buys a farm in a small country town. This means Lisa has to leave her beloved big-city life.
The TV show Green Acres was a sitcom that aired on CBS. It was set in a fictional town called Hooterville. This was the same place where another show, Petticoat Junction, was set. Sometimes, characters from Green Acres would appear on Petticoat Junction and vice versa. Green Acres was very popular and had high ratings for its first four years. However, in 1971, CBS decided to cancel many shows that were set in rural areas. This was part of a plan to change the network's image. So, Green Acres was cancelled, even though it was still popular.
Later Acting Roles
After Green Acres, Eva Gabor did a lot of voice acting for Disney. She voiced the elegant Duchess in The Aristocats. She also voiced the brave Miss Bianca in The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under. She also voiced the Queen of Time in the Sanrio film Nutcracker Fantasy.
Eva was also a regular guest on the game show Match Game. From 1983 to 1984, she appeared on Match Game Hollywood Squares Hour. In 1983, she reunited with Eddie Albert on Broadway. They starred together in the play You Can't Take It with You. She played the Grand Duchess Olga Katrina. In 1990, she tried to start a new TV series called Close Encounters. The pilot episode aired, but the show was not picked up for a full series.
Business Ventures
In 1972, Eva Gabor started her own fashion line. She worked with Luis Estevez, a fashion designer. Her business sold wigs, clothing, and beauty products.
