About the Story
The movie tells the story of Charlie Babbitt, a car dealer in Los Angeles, California. He learns that his father has passed away. Charlie is surprised to find out that most of his father's money was left to Raymond. Charlie had no idea he even had a brother!
Raymond lives in a special care home in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has a condition called autism. This means he sees the world differently and needs help with daily tasks. But Raymond also has an amazing memory. He can remember almost anything he sees or hears. This special ability is called being a "savant."
The Journey Begins
Charlie decides to take Raymond on a trip. They drive from Ohio all the way to Las Vegas, Nevada. In Las Vegas, Raymond uses his incredible memory to count cards in games. This helps them win a lot of money!
After Las Vegas, they continue their journey to Los Angeles. During their long drive, Charlie and Raymond get to know each other better. At first, Charlie is not happy about Raymond. But slowly, his feelings change. He starts to care for Raymond and wants to protect him.
A Special Bond
Raymond needs constant care because of his autism. Charlie realizes he cannot provide this care all the time. So, Raymond returns to his special home. Even though they are apart, their journey together changes Charlie forever. He learns to love and understand his brother.
Awards and Inspiration
Rain Man was a very successful movie. It won several big awards, including an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. The movie's story was inspired by a real person named Kim Peek (1951-2009). He was also a savant with an incredible memory.
