Early Life and Photography
Nan Goldin was born in Washington, D.C., in 1953. She grew up near Boston, Massachusetts. Her father worked in broadcasting and was a chief economist for the Federal Communications Commission (a government group that controls radio, TV, and internet).
When she was 16, Goldin went to the Satya Community School. There, a staff member showed her how to use a camera in 1969. Goldin quickly saw that a camera could be a strong tool. She believed it could help show important issues to the public. She was inspired by early films from Andy Warhol and movies by Federico Fellini. She also liked fashion magazines like French and Italian Vogue.
Life and Work as a Photographer
Goldin finished her studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1977 or 1978. During this time, she mostly worked with a special kind of photo print called Cibachrome. Her early work is linked to a group called the Boston School of Photography.
After school, Goldin moved to New York City. She started taking pictures of the new-wave music scene. She also photographed the lively communities of friends in the city during the late 1970s and early 1980s.
Goldin often shows her photos as a slideshow. She has presented her work at film festivals. Her most famous slideshow is 45 minutes long and shows 800 pictures. Her early photos often focused on friendships and daily life. Her pictures are described as a way to "learn the stories and close details of those around her."
Since 1995, Goldin's work has included many different things. She has worked on book projects with Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki. She has also photographed New York City skylines and interesting landscapes, especially people in water. She has also taken pictures of babies, parents, and family life.
In 2006, her exhibition called Chasing a Ghost opened in New York. This was her first show that included moving pictures, music, and a voiceover. It featured a three-screen slide and video show called Sisters, Saints, & Sybils. Her works are becoming more like movies, showing her interest in filmmaking.
Over time, her photos changed. They moved from showing youthful experiences to scenes of family life in different places around the world. Goldin now lives and works in New York, Paris, and London.
Fashion Photography
Goldin has also done commercial fashion photography. She has worked for several well-known brands. In 2010, she shot campaigns for Australian label Scanlan & Theodore and Italian luxury brand Bottega Veneta. In 2011, she worked for shoemaker Jimmy Choo. In 2013, she photographed for Dior in a campaign called 1000 LIVES, featuring Robert Pattinson.
In March 2018, the clothing brand Supreme released a special collection with Goldin. This collection included jackets, sweatshirts, and t-shirts in various colors.
