Assumption is a small city in Christian County, Illinois, United States. About 1,155 people lived there as of the 2020 census. It's a quiet place with a rich history.

History of Assumption
Assumption was first known by a different name, "Tacusah." The city later got its current name from Assumption Parish, Louisiana. A post office opened in Assumption in 1858.
Assumption was once home to the deepest coal mine in Illinois. This mine went down over 1,000 feet below the ground! It stopped operating in the 1930s.
The First National Bank of Assumption was started in 1900. It is known as the oldest bank in Christian County. This is because it was the only bank in the county that stayed open during the Great Depression. The Great Depression was a very difficult time for many businesses.
In 2017, the community of Assumption received important news. The remains of United States Air Force Captain Joseph S. Smith were found. He was a pilot who was shot down in Cambodia in 1971 during the Vietnam War. Many people from Assumption came together to welcome him home and attend his burial in July 2017.

As of the 2020 census, 1,155 people lived in Assumption. There were 514 households and 262 families. The city has a mix of people from different backgrounds.
Education in Assumption
Assumption has been part of the Central A&M School District since 1992. This district also includes the village of Moweaqua and nearby rural areas.
- Central A&M Middle School (grades 6-8) is located in Assumption.
- Bond Elementary School (pre-kindergarten to 2nd grade) is also in Assumption.
- The main office for the school district is located here too.
About 170 students attend the middle school.
Assumption is also home to Kemmerer Village. This is a private organization that helps children. It was named after Philip Kemmerer, who left land to help "orphans and friendless poor" in 1884. The facility opened in 1914 as the Kemmerer Orphan Home. Over time, its name changed to Kemmerer Children's Home and then Kemmerer Village.

- Lloyd Burdick was a football player.
- James T. Carroll was born in Assumption. He later became a Los Angeles City Council member in 1933.
- John Dudra was a baseball player for the Boston Braves. He was born in Assumption in 1916.
- Brant Hansen is a radio personality. He graduated from Assumption High School in 1987.
