Asterix and the Big Fight is an exciting French comic book. It's the seventh story in the popular Asterix comic series. René Goscinny wrote the story, and Albert Uderzo drew the amazing pictures. In French, its original name is Le Combat des chefs, which means "The Battle of the Chieftains." This comic first appeared in parts in Pilote magazines in 1964. It was later translated into English in 1971.

The Big Fight: A Roman Challenge

The Romans were often defeated by the brave Gaulish villagers. A Roman advisor named Felonius Caucus came up with a plan. He suggested a special one-on-one fight, called a single combat.

Who Will Fight?

The fight would be between Vitalstatistix, the chief of Asterix's village, and Cassius Ceramix. Ceramix was a Gaulish chief who worked with the Romans. Old Gaulish rules said the loser's whole tribe would join the winner.

Getafix's Magic Potion Problem

Ceramix worried that Vitalstatistix would win easily. This was because Vitalstatistix had Getafix's magic potion. This potion made the Gauls super strong and invincible. To stop this, Caucus sent soldiers to capture Getafix.

While trying to fight off the Romans, Obelix accidentally hit Getafix. He used a large stone monument called a menhir. This hit made Getafix lose his memory and act a bit crazy.

Finding a Cure for Getafix

After Cassius Ceramix officially challenged Vitalstatistix, Asterix and Vitalstatistix tried to help Getafix. They tried making different potions to bring his memory back.

Funny Potion Experiments

These experiments led to some funny moments. For example, they captured a Roman soldier named Infirmofpurpus. They tested a potion on him, and it made him float in the air!

Visiting a Druid Doctor

Next, Asterix and Obelix went to see Psychoanalytix. He was a druid who helped with mind problems. They asked Obelix to show what happened to Getafix. Obelix then accidentally hit Psychoanalytix with a menhir too! Now, both druids were in the same confused state.

Crazy Potions and Training

The two confused druids started making strange potions. These potions just changed people's skin colors. Meanwhile, Asterix helped Vitalstatistix get ready for the fight. They mostly did a lot of jogging. The Romans secretly planned to arrest Ceramix after the fight. They didn't want him to challenge their power later.

The Fight and Its Surprising End

As the big fight began, something amazing happened. Getafix accidentally made a potion that brought his memory back! Obelix, trying to help, threw another menhir at him. But Getafix stayed clear-headed this time.

Vitalstatistix's Victory

Getafix quickly started making a fresh supply of magic potion. The fight itself was quite boring at first. Vitalstatistix, being in better shape, just ran circles around Ceramix. Ceramix tried hard but couldn't catch him.

Once Vitalstatistix heard Getafix was better, he quickly defeated his tired opponent. The Romans didn't like this outcome. But the Gauls, now full of magic potion, easily defeated the Romans.

A Generous Outcome

During the battle, Obelix accidentally hit Ceramix with a third menhir. This made Ceramix lose his memory too. Vitalstatistix decided not to take over Ceramix's tribe. Instead, he sent Ceramix home with honor.

Psychoanalytix also went back to his work, even with his memory loss. He was still successful, despite some "side effects" from his medicines. Ceramix, now like Psychoanalytix, became "the most polite chief in Gaul." His tribe went back to their Gaulish ways and continued fighting Rome. Vitalstatistix's tribe celebrated their many victories.

Animated Film Adaptation

An animated movie was made in 1989. It had the same name as the comic book. However, the movie's story is actually more like another comic, Asterix and the Soothsayer. Only the part about Getafix losing his memory was kept from Asterix and the Big Fight.
