From 2010 to 2018, Professor Beckmann was the president of the Pädagogische Hochschule Schwäbisch Gmünd. She also taught at the University of Ulm.

Astrid Beckmann's Early Life and Education

Astrid Beckmann was born in Berlin, Germany. When she was in school, she was very good at math. She even won first place once and second place once in a big national math contest in Germany. This contest was called Bundeswettbewerb Mathematik.

After finishing school in 1976, she went to the Free University of Berlin. There, she studied both mathematics and physics. Later, she wrote her physics thesis at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin. Her research looked at how different metal materials conduct electricity.

Becoming a Physicist

After her studies, Astrid Beckmann trained to be a teacher in Darmstadt. Then, she started working as a physicist. She joined the Institute of Physics at Goethe University Frankfurt. While working in Frankfurt, she studied special materials called rare earth compounds. She focused on understanding their properties.

Astrid Beckmann's Work in Math Education

In 1989, Astrid Beckmann earned her doctorate degree in mathematics. She got this degree from the University of Giessen. Her special project was about teaching geometry proofs to students aged 12 to 15. This was a very important topic for helping young people learn math.

After getting her doctorate, she continued to work in mathematics education. She even received a special scholarship to help her research. From 1994 to 2003, she taught math and physics in different places. She taught in Lemgo and at Leibniz University Hanover.

Developing New Teaching Ideas

In 2003, she completed her postdoctorate at Leibniz University Hanover. Her big project was about creating a new way to teach different subjects together. She focused on how mathematics connects with physics, language, and computer science. This idea helps students see how subjects are linked in the real world.

Leading a University

After a short time as a professor at Leibniz University Hannover, Astrid Beckmann became a full professor. In 2003, she joined the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd. She taught mathematics and how to teach mathematics there.

From 2003 to 2005, she led the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science. Then, from 2005 to 2008, she was the vice-president. In this role, she helped with research, development, and international connections for the university.

Becoming University President

In 2009, everyone at the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd voted for Astrid Beckmann. They chose her to be their new president. She held this important job from 2010 to 2018.

During her time as president, she also took on other leadership roles. From 2011 to 2015, she was the deputy leader of a group called the State Rectors' Conference for Universities of Education (LRK). Then, from April 2015 to 2017, she became the main leader of this group. She also represented these universities in a bigger group called the German Rectors' Conference (HRK).
