Early Life and Studies
Astrid Beckmann was born in Berlin, Germany. When she was in school, she was very good at math. She even won first place and second place in a big national math competition in Germany.
After finishing school in 1976, she went to the Free University of Berlin. There, she studied mathematics and physics. Later, she wrote a special research paper, called a "thesis," in physics. This paper was about how different metals conduct electricity. She did this research at the Helmholtz Center for Materials and Energy (HZB).
Becoming a Physicist
After her studies, Astrid Beckmann completed her teacher training in Darmstadt. Then, she started working as a physicist. She worked at the Institute of Physics at Goethe University Frankfurt. In Frankfurt, she worked in a "crystal lab." Here, she studied different materials, especially those with rare earth elements.
Focus on Mathematics Education
In 1989, Beckmann earned her doctorate degree in mathematics from the University of Giessen. Her research was about how to teach geometry proofs to students aged 12 to 15.
After getting her doctorate, she continued to work in the field of mathematics education. She even received a scholarship to help with her research. From 1994 to 2003, she taught math and physics in different places, including Leibniz University Hanover.
Developing New Teaching Ideas
In 2003, she completed her "postdoctorate" at Leibniz University Hanover. This is another advanced research degree. Her research looked at how to connect different school subjects. She focused on teaching math together with physics, language, and computer science.
University Leadership
After a short time as a professor at Leibniz University Hannover, Beckmann became a Professor of Mathematics and Mathematics Education in 2003. She taught at the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd.
From 2003 to 2005, she was in charge of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science. Then, from 2005 to 2008, she became the vice-president for Research, Development, and International Relations. This meant she helped with new research projects and connections with other countries.
President of the University
In 2009, Astrid Beckmann was chosen to be the president of the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd. She held this important position from 2010 to 2018.
She also played a big role in groups that represent universities. From 2011 to 2015, she was the deputy chair of the State Rectors' Conference for Universities of Education. She then became the chair from 2015 to 2017. She also represented these universities in the Senate of the German Rectors' Conference.
