Astrid Carolina Herrera Irazábal was born in Yaracuy, Venezuela, on June 23, 1963. She is the third child of David Herrera and Odelia Irazábal. Astrid grew up with three sisters and one brother.

Astrid Carolina Herrera has been married twice. In 1988, she married Edgar Ignacio Padrón Godoy, but they divorced in 2001. In 2002, she married Venezuelan baseball player Tony Álvarez. They divorced in 2005.
On June 5, 2014, Astrid became a mother. She gave birth to her first child, a girl, named Miranda Carolina Herrera Irazábal. In 2017, Astrid had surgery for a small growth in her brain. Doctors found that the growth was not harmful.
