Astrid Uhrenholdt Jacobsen (born January 22, 1987) is a former cross-country skier from Norway. She was also a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Astrid skied for the IL Heming club in Oslo, close to Holmenkollen. Her biggest win was a gold medal in the sprint event at the 2007 World Championships. On April 22, 2020, she announced she was stopping her skiing career to focus on studying medicine.

Astrid's Skiing Journey

Early Career Highlights (Before 2007)

Before the 2006-2007 season, Astrid had already competed in five World Cup events. Her best result was finishing 10th in a freestyle sprint race in Changchun, China. She also placed 17th in a classic sprint in Drammen.

Astrid also showed great promise in Junior World Championships.

  • In 2005, she won a silver medal in the sprint event in Rovaniemi, Finland.
  • In 2006, in Kranj, Slovenia, she won two gold medals. One was in the sprint, and the other was in a 5 km classical style race. She finished that race 18.4 seconds faster than the second-place skier!

She also competed in the Scandinavian Cup and won a silver medal at the National Championship in January 2005.

Breaking Through in 2007

Astrid started the 2006-2007 season strong. She achieved her highest World Cup finish yet, coming in fourth place in a classic sprint. Her good results led to her being chosen for the Norwegian sprint team for the World Championships in Sapporo. There, she won her first major international title in the sprint event. She also earned two bronze medals: one in the team sprint and another in the 4 x 5 km relay.

Success and Challenges (2007-2011)

The 2007-2008 season was fantastic for Astrid. She won her first World Cup race in Rybinsk, a 15 km freestyle event. Overall, she had 2 wins and reached the podium 6 times that season. This placed her second overall in the World Cup standings.

After this successful season, Astrid faced some difficulties. She had injuries and felt less motivated. She returned to competition at the start of the Tour de Ski, but had to leave early because she became ill. She also had a cycling accident in June 2009, where she hurt her jaw, elbow, and back.

At the 2010 Winter Olympics, Astrid finished fifth in the team sprint and seventh in the individual sprint. In July 2010, she dislocated her shoulder while training, but she recovered quickly. At the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo, Astrid and her teammate Maiken Caspersen Falla won a bronze medal in the Team Sprint.

Finding Her Stride Again (2013 Onwards)

In 2013, Astrid had a great start to the year, finishing second in the Tour de Ski on January 6. She later shared that her mother, Dr. Britt Uhrenholdt Jacobsen, had suggested she might have a gluten allergy. Tests confirmed this, and Astrid said this diagnosis was very important for her future career. It helped her understand her body better and improve her performance.
