Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Asuman Güven Aksoy is a Turkish-American mathematician who studies different areas of math. She looks at topics like how spaces are structured, how to measure distances, and how certain math operations work. She teaches at Claremont McKenna College, where she is a special professor of mathematics.

Becoming a Mathematician

Asuman Aksoy loved math and physics from a young age. She studied both subjects at Ankara University in Turkey and earned her first degree in 1976. She then continued her studies, getting a master's degree in mathematics from Middle East Technical University in 1978. Her master's project was about special types of math spaces.

In 1978, she moved to the United States to study even more. She went to the University of Michigan and later became a US citizen. She earned her highest degree, a doctorate (Ph.D.), in mathematics from the University of Michigan in 1984. Her doctorate work was about different ways to estimate things in math.

Her Career Journey

After finishing her Ph.D., Dr. Aksoy started teaching at Oakland University in 1984. She became a permanent professor there in 1987. In 1990, she moved to Claremont McKenna College. She was even the head of the math department there twice, from 1997 to 2000 and again from 2007 to 2009. In 2009, she was given the special title of Crown Professor and Roberts Fellow.

Books She Wrote

Dr. Aksoy has written two math books with another mathematician, Mohamed Amine Khamsi:

  • Nonstandard Methods in Fixed Point Theory (published in 1990)
  • A Problem Book in Real Analysis (published in 2009)

Awards and Recognition

In 2006, a group called the Southern California–Nevada Section of the Mathematical Association of America gave Dr. Aksoy an award. It was for her excellent teaching of mathematics at a college or university.
