Athelstan is a very small place in Taylor County, Iowa, United States. It is located along the Platte River, right on the border with Missouri. A big part of Athelstan is owned by the Young family. In 2000, only 18 people lived there. By 2010, it was part of a special area called a census-designated place, and the total population for that area was 19. In 2020, the population of Athelstan itself was just 6 people.
History of Athelstan
Athelstan started to grow when the Chicago Great Western Railroad was built through the area. More people moved there because of the railroad. In 1940, the population of Athelstan reached 141 people.
However, over the years, many people moved away from small towns like Athelstan to bigger cities. This is sometimes called "rural flight." Because so many people left, Athelstan was no longer a self-governing community in 2004. This means it stopped being an official town with its own local government.
