Athenea's Football Journey

Starting Out in Cantabria

Athenea began playing football at age 11 with Reocín in Cantabria, Spain. Later, she joined Ave Fénix Racing. She stayed there until the 2018–19 season. During her time there, she scored an amazing 37 goals in 46 games! In 2017, her team became part of Racing Santander.

Playing for Deportivo

In August 2019, Athenea moved to Deportivo Abanca. This club had just been promoted to the top league, Primera División. Her old club tried to stop her transfer, but Deportivo offered her a professional contract. Finally, her transfer was officially allowed in September.

Athenea played her first game for Deportivo on September 8, 2019. She scored her first goal on January 19, 2020. In their first season, Deportivo was a surprise team, finishing fourth. The next year was tougher. The team struggled and was moved down to a lower league. After her contract ended, Athenea signed with Real Madrid. This was exciting because Real Madrid was going to play in the Champions League!

Joining Real Madrid

Athenea joined Real Madrid on July 26, 2021. Her first game for Real Madrid was in a big European competition. They played against Manchester City and tied 1-1. Athenea was one of the best players in that match! A few days later, she played her first league game for Real Madrid.

Even though the team had a shaky start, Athenea played very well. Real Madrid fans even chose her as the best player of the month in September. She scored her first goal for Real Madrid against Villarreal CF. This goal helped her team win 2-0.

Athenea is known for her strong dribbling skills and how she moves the ball forward. She and her teammate Esther González were praised for their great play in a 3-1 win against Madrid CFF. This win showed that the team was becoming stronger and more organized. In October 2022, a sports report said that Athenea was the best winger in Liga F at successfully dribbling past opponents.

Playing for Spain

Youth National Teams

Athenea was chosen to play for the Spain U19 team. She played in the 2018 UEFA Under-19 Championship in Switzerland, where her team won the title! The next year, she also played in the same competition, and her team finished as runners-up.

Senior National Team

Athenea made her debut for the senior Spanish national team on October 23, 2020. She came on as a substitute in a game against Czechia. This made her the first player from Deportivo to play for the full national team. On September 21, 2021, she scored her first goal for Spain in a 7-0 victory against Hungary. She also scored two goals in a friendly match against Morocco, helping Spain win 3-0.

In February 2022, Athenea was initially not called up for a tournament. Instead, she played a friendly game with the under-23 team. However, after a teammate got injured, Athenea was called to join the senior team. In Spain's second game of the tournament, Athenea played the second half and was named the best player of the match! After another great game, she was chosen as the best player of the entire tournament.

Athenea was part of the squad for the Euro 2022. She played in all three group stage matches. In the quarter-final game against England, she helped set up a goal for her teammate Esther González.
