Where Was Athletic Park?

The baseball field was located in a busy part of Washington, D.C. It was near S Street NW, 9th Street NW, T Street NW, and 10th Street NW. This spot was about a quarter-mile southwest of where Griffith Stadium would later be built.

The Team That Played There

The Washington Nationals, or "Statesmen," were part of a baseball league called the American Association. Sadly, the team stopped playing before the 1884 baseball season was even finished.

What Happened to Athletic Park?

Local newspapers first mentioned the name "Athletic Park" in 1883. For a few years, it was used for many different public events. It continued to be a popular spot until at least 1888.

By 1889, the land where the park stood was being divided into smaller pieces. These pieces were used to build new homes. Today, the area is filled with houses and buildings related to education.
